Advice please on obtaining Certificates
« on: Thursday 16 March 06 06:02 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone please tell me what is the minimum amount of info needed to apply for a birth or marriage certificate?
I know my grandfather was 89 when he died in 5th May 1973 (On his memorial card) so his birth would be 1884 +/-  1year.
I know he married "Annie Mulhern" my grandmother prior to 1921.
Here's where it gets tricky.... I was told by my father that his father added the "O" to his name Doherty. So should I try to apply for a birth certifiacte for James Joseph Doherty or O'Doherty.
What then for the marriage.. I can't be specific about dates or even the name of Grandmother... on my dad's birth certificate it gives her name as Annie Mulhern.
This Irish  searching is sooo difficult. Nothing online... sigh!
Thanks
Jackie

Thanks Mary,
I found that just last night. I have ordered the certificate (at great expense) from Irish Genealogy.
I didn't want to risk ordering it from GRO as I didn't have details such as date and county and I couldn't order online.
It seems nothing is easy or inexpensive searching in Ireland.
Why can't they put all the BMD  indexes online? I am sure that most people researching their families from Ireland don't have the luxury of popping over to Dublin to search. Grrrr  >:(
This certificate won't get me much further back as I already know Annie's maiden name. At least it will get me their father's Christian names and possibly a definite County to search in.
enough ranting
thanks again

Hi Jackie,

I received the certificate of my great grandparents marriage today and as you say it didn't get me much farther back but it gave me the area they were living in at the time of their marriage.

I find it annoying that you can't get indexes for Ireland as you can for England. The indexes for England are next to useless unless you know exactly when a person was born or married or died.

Scotland's People has opened things up, perhaps England and Ireland will follow suit.

Regards

Marion
