William Herbert b1835 Royal Navy 1871
« on: Friday 17 March 06 11:47 GMT (UK) »
I've just been given some info on a William Herbert born Brompton, Kent from the 1871 Census. How do i find out about him now. These are the details

RG10/5781 Folio 102

William Herbert "b mate" 38 Married brompton
Vessel: Hiternia  (I think this should read Hibernia)
Town:- Dock Yard Malta
Reg District:- Royal Navy

Any help would be appreciated as this is the first time that i have found a ancestor in the Armed forces and i have no clue where to look for info on him, plus i never knew he was married so is their a possibilty he married in Malta.

many thanks

Phil Brown

Hi Phil

You can download his service record for £3.50 though the age is a little out (born 1832)

ooooh Phil how exciting  ;D  It seems that HMS Hibernia was a Flagship in the Med.

If you google the name of the ship, up comes loads of info, including a site I was going to recomend you to for Malta Family History

http://website.lineone.net/%7Estephaniebidmead/second.htm

If the service record Casalguidi found is his (im sure it probably is) now you have his service number, you maybe able to obtain his service record, but in truth I'm not so hot on naval records, but this might help

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/militaryhistory/navy/rnstep1.htm

Let us know how you get on  ;D

Hello Browny

Well, I think I have REAL good news for you.

Lets hope I am correct. I have been searching for this HERBERT connection that relates to Malta. If it all works out right, then I can give you a fair bit of data.

My mother's auntie Susannah Cook  b 27-12-1862 in Senglea Malta, married John Herbert a Royal Navy seaman. He was born c1859 in Floriana.

They married Thursday 1st Feb 1883 in Senglea Malta. John Herbert's father was William Herbert and he also married a Maltese girl, (likely about 1858)  her name was Teresa Agius.

(My note: Which means the Herberts were in Malta a long time.)

I do not have William Herbert & Teresa Agius's marriage cert. This can be obtained from the Floriana Parish Church. They have records dating back to 1844. I can tell you how to contact the Parish.

Jack Herbert b 1894  Floriana Malta was the son of John Herbert and Susannah Cook.  Jack Herbert was a very famous soccer player. He married in Malta. Had a family. He died in Chatham Eng. 1942  age 48 yrs.

I have'nt got Jack Herbert's marriage cert but I do have John's marriage 1883.

There are still quite a few Herberts in Malta and they all hail from Floriana.

If you apply for William & Teresa's marriage cert c1858 that is provided they did marry in the Floriana Parish then that should confirm the above detail.

I do have some photos and some months ago I made contact with a Christine Herbert (she lives in Spain) who has very good detail on the family. I'm waiting for some news from her.

Jack Herbert b1894 the soccer star was called 'The man with the golden boots'  He was my mother's cousin.

Hope all this works out right and thanks for your message.

I do have photos of the Hibernia.

Best regards. ~~ a distant cousin.

Hello Browny

I've just sent you an e-mail

And thanks to everyone's comment.
Just for the record. The PRO records in Malta (at Valletta) start Sept 1863.  They do not accept searches but when you call in person they do look back & forward a couple of years. The fees for certs are much cheaper then what we pay in Aust & UK.

Many Parishes have records going bak to about 1600 and the Parish of St Paul in St Paul's Street Valletta has records going back to 1560. Every Parish Register has been copied and these copies are held at St Paul's in Valletta.

The Parishes do not charge for Certificates but a donation is always expected. You just cannot walk into a Parish Church and expect to be looked after pronto. Its best to make an appointment or be there at about 10.30am or 3.30pm.

There are Genealogy searching services on the Island. I also know a person who's charges are very reasonable but he only searches for marriages.

You can also apply for Certificates from the PRO in Valletta online.  I have just received a birth cert sent to me by snail mail for a cost of $12 Aust. (about 5 UK pounds)

Hope this helps

Bill.
