Marriages of Hawick couples in St Giles Edinburgh

Hi All

Can anyone tell me why couples from the Borders (in my case Hawick)
would be married in St Gliles. I have quite a few who have married in this church whilst working and living in Hawick. just wondered if this is a special church !

I have a whole host of ancestors who lived in Melrose and Hawick and who all went to Edinburgh to get married; unsure of reason but don't forget there was an established railway link at the time so maybe just a way of showing status and having a day out!
