FERRIER of Angus
« on: Friday 25 March 05 00:49 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for information on JOHN FERRIER born March 13, 1725/26 in Angus.  He married Susannah Scott on January 6, 1757 in Barry, Angus.

They had the following children:

James 1757; John 1759; Alexander 1761; David 1763-1772; William 1765; Patrick 1768; George 1770; David 1773; Jean 1777.

There may possibly be more children.  :-\

Any information on John's parents, siblings or his children would be greatly appreciated.

Happy searching,  Ontchick  :)

Hi Ontchick, afraid I can't help you at the moment but I have 2 Ferriers from Forfar in my tree - they might connect at some point....

Peter Ferrier b. about 1832, Forfar.  One child (that I know of)
Ann Ferrier b. 1853, Forfar.

Keep me in mind if you come accross any connection.

Have a nice day  :)

Hi,

I have a William Ferrier b. 25/7/1794 in Kinnell, Forfar whose father was also William which might fit in with your william b 1760s.  The father was listed as a dyker - later descendants were stonemasons - and his wife was Catherine Bowen.  Alexander is also one of the names which appears with regularity in the descendants.

Any possibility of a link?

KIds : John, Ann, Jean, Mary and James.

I would suspect your people and mine may be related but for now I have no connection.  I will let you know if I find anything.

Hi,

Does anyone have FERRIERS in their tree?

I'm trying to find the birth/baptism of ALEXANDER FERRIER in about 1755-65.

He was a weaver and married JEAN STEWART on 3 Aug 1781 in Perth.

They had the following children (all in Perth):-

Thomas 1782
Alexander 1784
Jean 1786
Ann 1788
Charles Bisset  1790 (my gggg grandfather)
John (1) 1791
James 1793
Robert 1795
John (2) 1797.

I've tried without any luck to find Alexander's baptism in Perth and Perthshire. I've noticed that there are quite a few Ferriers on the IGI from the Edinburgh area and wondered if his family may have moved up to Perth from there.

Can anyone help please?

Jill.

I have some ... not directly but connected.

My 4G Aunt, Elizabeth Meldrum born 26th Jan 1814 in Dundee married a Gibson Ferrier 27th Jun 1839 in Ferry-Port-on-Craig, Fife.

Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas Meldrum and Elizabeth Pirie of Fife, somewhere, possibly Newburgh.

I don't know anything much about Gibson - he died before 1881 but I can't find his dc. Gibson and Elizabeth had minimum 4 children. They are shown on the 1841 as living in Dundee where Gibson Ferrier aged 25 was a clerk born 'Outside Census County'.

I have a copy of Elizabeth's will and quite a bit on the Ferrier children - especially their eldest John Ferrier who became very successful as an East India Merchant.

I have also in my notes, the following with regard to their son Gibson, born 5th Jan 1844 in Dundee

"In 1871, Gibson was a lodger at 21, Gt. Percy Street, London along with his brother John. His occupation is shown as Commercial Clerk (Bank). Gibson may have died before his mother 1886, he is not mentioned in her will, she left everything to John and their sister Eliza. He could also be the Gibson Ferrier, Newspaper Manager, married to Annabella b. Auckland NZ (British Subject) in the 1891 English Census living in Kensington, but unlikely as this Gibson is shown as being born in Perth"

I mention it only because I seem to have found another Gibson Ferrier with a Perth connection.

regards,

Lindsay

Hi Lindsay,

I'm beginning to think that FERRIER must be quite an unusual name. There don't seem to be many about.

I'm afraid I don't know of any connection to Gibson Ferrier. I see you have Gibsons (as a surname) in your tree - might there be any connection between these two branches of your tree or is it just a coincidence?

Stragely enough, I also have Gibson in my tree ( though not in Scotland - so far!) and I also have an Elizabeth Pirie but she was from Aberdeenshire.

Small world!

Jill.
