Cornwall to California via Panama
« on: Tuesday 28 March 06 12:36 BST (UK) »
Just wondering if anyone can help me, before l go completely bald!

My 2Ggrandparents John Henry STEPHENS/STEVENS and Mary (Trevena) both born in Cornwall England were in California by 1862.

Our John Henry Stephens/STEVENS (miner) b.Abt 1838 married Mary in Cornwall in 1859, so sometime between this date and 1862 they sailed.
l'm not quite sure what port they left England from around the Cornwall area.

The following is from page 66 Louis J. Rasmussen's "San Francisco Passenger Lists," Vols. 1
"They arrived in San Francisco 14 days out from Panama on the steamer Golden Age (June 16, 1862).  Left Panama on June 3rd at 7:00AM; arrived Acapulco, Mexico on June 9th at 0:15AM;  Sailed for San Francisco at 5:30AM."

My query is, what ship they would have sailed on to get to Panama. From what l can find the "Golden Age" was only doing the Panama San Francisco route in 1862.

Could they have sailed to another Port in the US between 1859 and june 1862.?

Where do l start looking for what ship they may have sailed to the US or Panama on? l have left a couple of queries on US sites for any arrival information.
Looking at many sites, you really have to know what ship to look for.

l'd be most grateful for any assistance and thank you in advance.
