Lena just doesn't seem to fit in this time period or ethnic group ??? I think of Lena as being a slavic name.  Of course could have been after a friend or mid-wife.
Researching Smith from Shetland, Herd from Arboath, Whittier, Combs from England & Wales plus Albrecht (Albright), Carkner (Kirchner) & Syrnyk (Syrnick) from Prussia. Laurenson in South Africa

Hi Zeb if you have a look at freebmd you'll see a marriage between a George & Elizabeth (Lander) in 1875 at Pembroke. Also a death of an Elizabeth Harris at age 37 in 1897. This might help you onto the right track!

I have the 1881 census on CD if you'd like a look-up.

Hi all,

I searched for the marriage to an Elizabeth Lander and found it registered at Pembroke, March 1875.

As for the death I found that as well but I believe they had four children in London from 1884-1895 soI'm not sure about the death being correct but any help would be really appreciated.

It looks like Lena to me.  You didn't say what year the census was but on FreeBMD there are 5 Lena Harris born between 1875 and 1885.  The name was more popular that we think.

I agree with Lauraine that Lena would be most unusual for the period.  If the other childrens' names were also unusual, that could strengthen the argument, but they are all very typical for the era.

When faced with such a problem, it's best to compare the handwritten letters with other examples where the word is unambiguous.  Unfortunately, on the small sample that Zeb posted there is no "n".  There is an "m", for which the downward stroke is vertical, or actually has a reverse slope.  That's why the "n" in "Lena" is not convincing to me.

If Zeb could have a look at other entries by the same enumerator and check for n's, that would help to establish whether what appears as an "n" in the child's name is or isn't.

Cheers
