Is it possible to find earlier records? completed
« on: Thursday 06 April 06 16:06 BST (UK) »
This may ramble on a bit, so apologies in advance!

I am trying to research my husband's Welsh ancestors.  I have today received his gr.gr.grandparents marriage certificate, so now have the names of his gr.gr.gr.grandfathers.  The problem is the marriage took place in 1837 so even if I could find them in 1841 it would still be as a couple.  Is there anyway I could find earlier records - baptisms etc., or am I going to have to be contented with what I have?

Apologies again for the ramblings, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Sandie

Hi Sandie,
Parish registers are good for info i.e baptisms, marriages
Or sometimes familysearch.org.
They are not always accurate though, but it's worth a look.
Good luck.

Thanks for the info. on parish records.  The problem is I live in South London, so can't see me being able to visit the Records Office soon.

I tried familysearch, can't find them.  I'll tell my husband he'll have to wait for the rest of his ancestors while I figure out how to the find them!

Thanks again

The LDS have a family centre in South Kensington that might just have the records you need.

Hi
have a look and see if there is a local family history society for that area. often members will look up local records if you contact them. there may also be some web links if you look on the roots board for that area. i have found various parish records transcribed and made available for Kent. if someone has done it for there you may also be lucky

Hi all - thanks for the good advice (particularly the news about the Record office refurbishment/ closure which I hadn't heard of previously).

Sandie: you might like to check out the links at the top of the Carmarthenshire board, which include local history society and parish record information.  Let me know if any of them are useful (or not!!) as I am trying to improve my own knowledge of resources in the area)

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi All

I checked out the links at the top which directed you to join the Carm.FHS.  When I first looked at the joining fee it looked a bit steep £20, but when you see the list of online data bases you can access - which you can subscribe to apparently for 30 days for £10 - it isn't bad.

The only problem I have now is patience - I have already bought three certificates for this lot and a newspaper article for one of my lot this month, so it's a case of waiting for the next pay day to come round, can I hold out???
