Carluke Lanrkshire.
« on: Tuesday 12 October 04 11:14 BST (UK) »
Carluke Lanarkshire,

James Shirlaw b. abt. 1777 married Mary Dunlop b. 1785   abt 1800
James was from Carluke and they both lived there after marriage but I cannot find any information of Mary, further  than being named on Their Son George’s Death cert., and from the M. I book of Carluke  she died in 1854 69 years old.
These are my ancestors and would like to find out more about Mary.
Maybe someone knows something
Thank you.

Hi, I had a quick look at the 1851 (In booklet form) census for Carluke while at the library today.  This was all the Shirlaws in Carluke.

Dist. 7 page 18

James Shirlaw age 41 born Carluke
Ellen Shirlaw age 22 born Lanark

Dist. 7 page 19
Mary Shirlaw age 66 born Cambusnethan
John Shirlaw age 32 born Carluke
Jane Shirlaw age 27 born Carluke

Dist. 2 page 24

James Shirlaw age 48 born Carnwath?
Isabella Shirlaw age 42 born Carluke
Thomas age 16 born Carluke
James age 14 born Carluke
George age 12 born Carluke
Andrew age 10 born Carluke
William age 8 born Carluke
Margaret age 3 born Carluke

Looks like that could be your Mary aged 66

Cambusnethan is in Lanark as is Carnwath they nearly have a border  ;)

James could be Mary's oldest son if she went home to her family.  Obviously only supposition but an interesting lead.

Good Luck,
Pam

I've owned a needlework sampler with the name Nellie H Shirlaw with what looks like Carluke and the date 1882. I think this would probably be by a young girl (making her birth date around the 1870's). Can anyone provide me with any information on Nellie please (Nellie being short for Nella, Eleanor,Ellen, Petronella or Cornelia)?

Hi Peterbilt

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

In Scotland, Helen, Ellen would be the most common variants for Nellie (great site here, a strong Scottish bias, www.whatsinaname.net/php/search.php?action=search2&search_name=nellie).

That middle initial may help to identify her. There is this entry in 1881:

James Shirlaw 54 Ironmonger
Mary Shirlaw 45
James Reid Shirlaw 16
Helen Houston Shirlaw 10
John Shirlaw 9
George Shirlaw 8

Address: High Street, Carluke

Also, father James' Will & Testament entry shows as:

James Shirlaw and Mary Dunlop are my GGG grandparents. Havnt managed to find any accurate info on Mary Dunlop unfortunately... Still looking tho.  I have found children Margaret, George, John, Christina, James and Jane. Jane Shirlaw is my GG grandmother who married James Orr.  I have James Shirlaws parents as George Shirlaw and Christian Smith?  Please let me know how we are connected.  Best wishes x
