Does anyone have any experience of self-publishing and could offer any advice and tips?

Firstly, it'll be expensive, and you would have to order a fair number of the books - more than your family and friends are likely to buy.  So you need to have a market for them, and do all the marketing yourself.  A local bookshop might take some on sale or return, if it's of local interest, but you won't be able to distribute them widely.  You'll also need to get several quotes and see some samples of their work.
If it's your family history you're doing, you could get someone to set it all up on computer for you (or do it yourself), print it off and just copy the number you need, as you need them.
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.

Hi Amy

I used to do it all myself with the help of a good photocopier.

Programmes like 'Publisher' can format, produce, provide copy ready material ready for printing - its then just a case of finding a good printer who will put your copy through their machines, collate and staple it.

I used to produce a 'one name journal' evey other month and the Local Family History Society Journal (180 copies) every quarter.

Its is not difficult
