'cefn' on documents
« on: Wednesday 13 October 04 21:09 BST (UK) »
hello!
On some old insurance documents from the 1900's, the address of the insured is given as Cefn, denbighshire.....can anyone shed any light on where this is?  the family is based in Ruabon, with the exception of this individual...is Cefn near Ruabon?
many thanks in advance

Hi

Cefn might have been used instead of putting Cefn Mawr, which is not that far from Ruabon.

Cefn means "back" (or "behind") in Welsh. Could it be an abbreviation of "Cefnigwr" (or something similar) - my written Welsh could be a lot better - we need some help from "D ap D" or somebody similar I think.

Well you can't get it from anwhere closer than someone who lives in the place!Oh yes, Cefn mawr is just two miles from Ruabon. On all the old Census',it is often very confusing, because Cefn Mawr came under the Civil parish of Ruabon,an address given as say,71 High Street "Ruabon",is often actually in Cefn Mawr.
