My understanding is that the final census details we see today were copied from the original reports which were collected door to door - hence we may see 'unknown' as a place of birth if the transcriber couldn't read the original report.

This happened on very census except the 1861 for my gggrandfather, who was from Londonderry.

So perhaps the writing was poor and the transcriber couldn't read it very well and just did his best - the only places I can think of which are a bit like 'Hine' are Henley and Ewelme.  To me, Oxford is definately the county.

Then again, I could be wrong.

Hi,
I'm back on the trail - 10 years later!

I think I have at last found the marriage of Robert and Mary in Westminster in May 1806, where Robert Frewer marries Mary Avery (spinster) at St John The Evangelist, Smith Square.

So I think I am looking for a Mary Avery, born circa 1787, in Oxfordshire (thanks to the infamous census record that started this thread). There seem to be some Averys in Henley - I'm wondering if Henley became "Hine"!

Any ideas?

Thanks
Rob

Well done for persistence, Rob.
It looks a bit far fetched, but it is possible. If you can find another census you might have the answer ...
Then again, it might turn up like one of mine ... one census says Birmingham and the one before it says Scotland ... Now that is fun!
