Help i'm at a standstill in my search for Scaffold's
« on: Sunday 30 April 06 19:34 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I wonder if anyone can help me, i have come to a standstill in my search. I have 2 names Florance jane scaffold and William Scaffold husband and wife both of whom appear on the 1901 cencus. I have found Florance's maiden name was Thompson and she was born in Grosmont, herefordshire in 1880, so she should appear on both the 1881 and 1891 cencus's but i cannot find her on either so am unable to trace the rest of her family, i have also checked the welsh cencus as Grosmont is on the border but still no sign.
William scaffold was born in woolhope Herefordshire in 1842 and is on the 1851 cencus but then disappears from the next 4 cencus's as do most of his family, not appearing again until the 1901 cencus. I am at a complete standstill and don't know where to go from here. I would be most grateful if anyone could give me some advice  as to what/where to look next.

From a very baffled Debbie

Hi Debbie

I've found William on the 1871 - spelled Scafold (RG10/2693 folio 22 page 3).

Searching name variations or using the wild card sometimes helps.  ;)

Best wishes

Hi Debbie,

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

Is it possible that we are looking for two different Williams, when I looked at the 1901 census he's transcribed as born 1862 and it does look like 39 on the image when you compare it other 5s on the page ???

If you got the marriage certificate it may give you their ages and should name their fathers.

Rowena is right about name variations, and, oh my :)  there are alot of them for SCAFFOLD  ::), but I will have a look for you (also for Florence)

Looked for Florence til I was cross-eyed last night!

EBN: does the marriage give any details at all?

There was a family in (I think) Lincolnshire in 1891 that looked like your pair, but they said they were born locally and were already living together as SCAFFOLD, so I think they can be discounted.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi Debbie,

The only William SCAFFOLD b. 1842 I could see in the 1851 census is,

HO107/1975 f.454 p.18 Woolhope

Drury Lane No.2

William SCAFFOLD  Head   43  Carpenter A???  ???
Hannah                Wife    35
Susan                  Daur   13  At home
Catherine              Daur   11  scholar at school
William                  Son     9         "  "
John                     Son     7         "  "
Ann                      Daur    5
James                  Son      2
George                 Son     m8

All born Woolhope except James born Fawnhope.

I can find this family in 1841 & 1861 written as CAFFELL/CAFFEL so maybe their name wasn't SCAFFOLD. I think I can also see this William b.1842 in the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census as CAFFELL married and living in Ashperton.

Let me know if you want any of these details.

Also I have looked on the GRO index for Florence and William,
I can't see a Florence Jane THOMPSON/THOMSON b.1879-1881 except a THOMSON Florence Jane De B. born Dec Q 1881 Southampton, maybe she was illegitimate and took her step-fathers name later?

The only William I can see b.1861-1863 is a William SCAFFULL Sep Q 1862 Hereford v.6a p.430, he could be a possibility :)

Regards
Daisy
