Hiya Jackie,

I used the ALL facility on Griffith's Valuation of Ireland to search for the Ellicott surname. There were only two listings ... both in Co. Mayo when the Valuation took place there in 1856/7 ... These listings may have been for the one person with properties in different townlands.

James Ellicott, Killeenrevagh, Kilcommon. Mayo
James Ellicott, Coolcon, Kilcommon. Mayo

The spelling ELLIGOTT (and MCELLIGOTT and MCKELLIGOTT) gets many hits in the Griffith Valuations (I don't have them so searched on the Failte Romhat site - but note that my understanding is that this is not a complete listing).  They are mostly in Limerick and Kerry with just a very few in other counties.  There are three entries in Co Mayo - may be the one person.

David ELLIGOTT  New Street  Ballinrobe  Mayo
David ELLIGOTT  Cornaroya  Ballinrobe  Mayo
David ELLIGOTT  Bridge Street  Ballinrobe  Mayo

Another spelling of the same name in Mayo?
ALICOT Dominic  Middletown  Kildacommoge  Mayo

And another possibility?
ALLICOATE John  Village of Manulla  Manulla  Mayo
ALLICOATE Dominick  Burris  Manulla  Mayo

DIRKIN, DURCAN, DURKAN and DURKIN are common in Mayo.  There's also one entry for DERKIN and one for DIRKAN.

 To Chris + Jap

Thankyou both for your help + info.
To be quite honest I'm totally lost, as to how I can get
back any further with my Durkan(later Durkin) or Elligott
(variations) anc.
Elligott? became Illicote + Ilcoat on 2 of their Childrens
Bapts.you can guess how long I spent searching for that
name!
As in all families there are stories, ours was that Mary E.
whose family were harness or bridle makers eloped
with the coachman Durkin.May be there is a ring of truth
in this, there does'nt appear to be many E's in Mayo.
According to census England (from 1861) both were born
c.1820 - 1st child Mary c 1849 Ireland(can't find a bapt)

Hello again Jackie,

Do you have James and Mary, and also Mary jnr, on every possible census?  Worth checking in the hope that there might be a more precise birthplace mentioned on one of them.

Also do you have death details for each of these three?  It might then be worth checking in local newspapers of the time for death and funeral notices just in case they hold some clues.  Also checking for monumental inscriptions.

Incidentally, there are no names beginning with "Ill" or "Ili" in Co Mayo in the Griffith Valuations on the Failte Romhat site!

JAP
A Note
I found whereabouts in Co Mayo my ancestors came from through a funeral notice.  I knew that my Ggfather came from Co Mayo and I knew the names of his parents (from his marriage certificate in Victoria, Australia - Victorian certs have great information).  Then I found in the Vic BDM indexes the accidental death of someone with the same parents - my Ggfather's brother; there was an inquest and a paragraph in the newspaper - but neither of these helped.  However the notice of his funeral was a huge help.  It invited friends of the late Mr B "formerly of Farm-hill, county Mayo, Ireland" to follow his remains to the place of interment, the "funeral to move from the residence of his brother-in-law, Mr D".

Of course you'd have to know that there were two townlands called Farmhill in Mayo - one near Ballina and one near Claremorris.  But as I now knew that Ggfather also had a sister and knew her married name, I was able to get her Victorian marriage certificate which listed her birthplace as Claremorris (the nearest town).  Not that any of this helped a great deal.  I paid for research from the South Mayo research centre but all they could find was the date of my Gggparents' marriage (1831 - and I've since seen it on the relevant film ordered in to my local LDS FH centre though it just gives names, date and witnesses; and I've confirmed that there are no baptisms of their children there).  And they told me that my Gggfather was not the person of the same name in Claremorris in the Griffith Valuations ...

Hi Jackie,
I came across this site by accident the other day. Can't see any Ellicott's but only had a quick look. Did however spot lots of Durkans hiding in the Claremorris lists. Unfortunately the site doesn't have a search facility so you have to trawl through each one using 'find' Hope it helps :)

Again thanks to all for help + info.

There are 2 deaths reg Dudley Worcs in 1870's for a
James + Mary Durkin.
James age 48  - 1876
Mary   ....    40 -  1875. (age?)

Their daug. Mary c 1849 born Ireland married a James
Durkin c.1842 Swinford Ire. in 1876 at Dudley.
In one of the cens. it states that she was born in Swinford.
Her in-laws state Swinford as their birthplace.
Were these Durkins related? perhaps I should start
looking in Swinford for her bapt.
Found a David Ellicott (grocer)
