Have you tried the Durham Mining Museum?  William's fatal accident is featured at their website dealing with Dean and Chapter Colliery: www.dmm.org.uk/colliery/d003.htm.  They may either have the colliery's records or know what became of them.  It may well be that there is something in the colliery's records relating to his widow - perhaps some compensation or a pension was paid, or at least there might be some clue as to where she and the children went after they left the colliery house.

Also, have you traced the coroner's report?  It might not tell you any more than you already know, but may provide some clues.

Yes I am back and still can not find where William's family went after his death
but a fellow Roots chatter has found William had siblings
he was from Stanhope and on the 1881 census

there were
Mary aged 6
Joseph aged 6  might they be twins?
Benjamin aged 3
George Edward aged 1
anyone out there decendant from one of this branch of the family that might shed light on to the other side I am looking for ?
thanks for looking

I am the only son of Laurence Walton who was William's 4th child born 31st March 1906, just a few months before William's untimely death.  When I was growing up in the 1950s the eldest son Matthew was living in Guildford, Surrey while sister Eliza was living in South Shields.  She had two daughters, Marjorie and Joan, while Matthew had a son and a daughter. I know nothing of Isabel.  My own father, Laurence moved to Birmingham in the 1920s where he met my mother, so I am Birmingham born and bred but have always kept in touch with family in the North east.  Both Eliza's two daughters are now deceased but between them have seven surviving children, 2 daughters by Joan (she did have three but one died) and 3 daughters and 2 sons by Marjorie.
I would be interested in finding out more about my grandfather, William.  I have been to Ferryhill and seen the monument there but would like to know more about his parents and ancestors.
