1881 and 1891 censuses
« on: Tuesday 16 May 06 12:17 BST (UK) »
Hi

Looking for a William Griffiths (middle name Henry) in either the 1881 or 1891 censuses. I've found him in 1901, aged 24, living in the village of Pantywaun in the parish of Gelligaer. His birthplace then is stated as Monmouthshire, Rhymney, only a stone's throw away from Pantywaun. That's all the information I have at present; any hopes??

Hi Mike

You can search for him in 1881 here:

http://www.familysearch.org/

When posting a request it is useful to supply the details of the census you have found, or at least the reference.  With more "popular" names, things like the occupation can be very helpful.

Edit: found it - RG13/5021/13/17

Will have a look in 1891 for him.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Thanks for all that. I've been experiencing considerable difficulty in obtaining a copy of William's marriage certificate (I DO know he married my great-grandmother, Sarah Jane THOMAS) from local registrars' offices (nobody wants to own up to having the records for Pantywaun, apparently!) so now have this on order from the GRO. This, however, is taking some time. His occupation is given in 1901 as "coal miner/hewer" and language as Welsh.

At last!!!! Finally have my great-grandparents' marriage certificate, at the third attempt. From this I have learned that my great-grandfather's father was also called William Griffiths, his occupation was "railway platelayer" and that he was deceased by the time of my great-grandparents' wedding in December 1897. My great-grandfather at that time was 20 years old, working as a coal miner and living at Gipsy Castle, near Dowlais, Merthyr Tydfil. One of the witnesses at the wedding was an Annie Griffiths, who I assume may well be a sister; can't be his mother, surely??!?!?! I know the area in between Rhymney, Dowlais and (where) Pantywaun (was) very well, and know that they're only a short distance away from each other. Therefore, if my great-grandfather gave his place of birth in 1901 as Rhymney he could possibly have been including Gipsy Castle. From this information, would anybody be able to trace my great-grandfather in 1881 or 1891, when he should appear as either 4 or 14-ish?

Hi Mike

That's great that the cert has arrived.

None of the possibles I found above has the right father.  Since we are struggling, we have to consider the possibility that his father died some time earlier.  His mother might have remarried.

Why don;t you have a go at finding him in 1881 - link above - and I will have another go at 1891?  Let me know if you find him first, as this will assist me considerably!!

Hello both
Have a look at 1881 Gelligaer RG11 5307 F 95 P45
Seems to fit the bill except that william jun is born Gelligaer,
The family are living at Reform street which i believe is in Pontlottyn.  On the other side of the valley over the river which formed the parish boundary is the town of Rhymney
Bedwellty.
