Hi Seanmac,

Does your information on Devereux's stretch as far as Ballaghkeen? I'm looking for a few in that area.

Dara.

No luck with that one, but there are Devereux mentioned in  'Frampton Irish'
a blog that  covers Wexford people abroad and mentions Patrick Devereux who married a Mary Cullen.

I picked up information about Matthew's family while researching our
English Devereux family who became hatters at Eton & Windsor in the 19thC - they have many descendants in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and India - but are not (directly) related to yours!

Matthew & Bridget went from Australia to New Zealand where he died in 1904 at Ahaura, Westland - Bridget died there a year later.

The first Devereux in Wexford was almost certainly a younger son of the Devereux of Herefordshire and the Welsh Marches, who went to Ireland in the 1100s.

Despite the myth that is endlessly repeated, there was no "invasion" by the Anglo-Normans. Dermot MacMurrough, King of Leinster, invited  Sir Richard fitz Gilbert of Clare, 2nd Earl of Pembroke & Striguil (ie.Chepstow) South Wales, a famous warrior known as “Strongbow”. Dermot promised Strongbow grants of land as well as his daughter's hand in marriage, in exchange for his help. His daughter Eva’s marriage to Strongbow created the enormous Irish landholdings of the Clare family. See more about this in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography - www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/5447

For information about Matthew and Bridget Devereux I suggest you contact the New Zealand researcher of this family

Good luck!

Erin 21,
At the chapel in Glenbrien, parish of Oylegate, there are a number of Devereuxs. A John and a Bridget serve as sponsors for the baptism of Clynch/Glinch children. Other Devereuxs that sponsored other Glinch Children include, Catherine, Philip, and Mary. Unfortunately for you, John and Bridget are very common names. Michael Glinch marries Catherine Maguire. They show Cooladyne as their townland. They give birth to eight children between 1804 and 1820 at which time the parish records go blank for 12 years. John Devereux sponsors a Glinch child in 1820 and Bridget sponsors a Glinch child in 1811.
In correspondence dating to 1939 a Devereux tells of his family being related to the Clynch/Glinch family, particularly Fr. Thomas Clinch, one of the rebel priest leaders of 1798.
