Kamptee, India 1892
« on: Thursday 18 May 06 22:01 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can help.
I have just found out an ancestor was killed in Kamptee in 1892. I believe he served in the army. How can I find out which regiment and any more details about what was going on in India at that time.
Many thanks.

Hi Annie.
I don't have much to go on. His name was John William Whiteside born abt 1868 in Bury, Lancashire. His parents were Thomas and Catherine. They lived at Preston.
Thomas served in the army and was at North Fort Barracks, Weymouth with his wife and son on 1871 census.
Catherine (nee Gordon) was born in Gibraltar, again I have looked and cannot find any details of her birth in military records. I only know her father was Henry, from her marriage cert. in 1859.
John William did not appear in a census after 1881 and it was only when I was trying to find Catherines birth that I found his death in 1892.
The only details it gave were John William Whiteside age 23 died Station Kamptee, India. These were from army records held at the library.
I still have had no luck with Catherine's birth abt 1841
Thanks.

Hi April,

Have you tried 1837 online? it's free to search but pay to view but it does have these overseas records: GRO Army death indices (1881-1955) and the GRO Army Chaplain's Birth indices (1796-1880).

http://www.1837online.com/Trace2web/OverseasStartSearchServlet

If you can find Catherine's birth and John William's death, you can then order the certificates.John's death cert should note his regiment which will enable you to research his army service further.

Mick :)
