Looking for information on the above mentioned.

Philip BURTENSHAW b1873, St John's Common, Horsham, Sussex.

His wife was Mary SMITH b1874, in Lewes, Sussex.

They were HAWKERS, but of what I don't know.

Any information greatly appreciated.

Hi jaynarbz,

This seems to be the family in 1871:

RG10/1096 Folio 52 Page 14
Partridge Green, West Grinstead, Sussex

Phillip Burtenshaw, Head, 28, Hawker, b. Sussex Claton*
Mary do, Wife, 22, b. do Slaugham
Mary Ann do, Daughter, 2, b. do Claton*
Fredric do, Son, 6 months, b. do West Grinstead

* Presumably Clayton.

This could be Philip in the 1861 Census:

RG9/583 Folio 126 Page 13
Barrack Houses, Clayton, Sussex

John Burtenshaw, Head, 67, Ag Lab, b. Sussex Clayton
Jane do, Wife, 47, b. Kent Brenchley
John do, Son, 24, Ag Lab, b. Sussex Ardingly
James do, Son, 20, Ag Lab, b. do Clayton
Philip do, Son, 14, Ag Lab Carter Boy, b. do Lindfield
Fanny do, Daur, 11, Scholar, b. Sussex New...(?)
Clara do, Daur, 9, do, b. do Beeding
Frederick do, Son, 6, b. do do

I am having trouble finding them earlier.  I wonder if Jane was John's second wife?

Have just received reply, please note that it is Melaine not Melanie. I'm not understanding how I am meant to post when I can't email yet. Have you passed my email address to jaynabz as she has asked for or can you please explain how I can get over this problem. I am so looking forward to receiving the photo she has.
Sorry to be a nuisance
Shirley

Hi jaynabz
Do you still need my personal email address or can you send picture via this. Sorry I'm new to this.
My mum, Neds daughter would never talk about her dads family, we new they were travellers, their names and that was pretty much it. Sadly now ,however she had dementia, and on a good day it's all she can remember.
My grandad was a lovely man with a big character and a big heart.
Mum has mentioned several times that her grandmother Mary always wore black had very long dark hair, wore a hat and smoked a clay pipe, I think this image is what started my needing to learn more about them!!
I look forward to hearing from you soon
Shirley
