Place name in Cavers
« on: Saturday 27 May 06 12:16 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

Can anyone decipher this place name in Cavers?  I have tried looking through the Genuki Roxburghshire Gazetteer for suggestions but no luck yet!

Thanks in advance,

Hi there,

I am happy with 'lands'.  I couldn't make out the first letter, but now you mention W, I can see it.  Now we just have to figure out the middle bit!!  ;D

Cheers,

Hi there,

It is the marriage of Andrew Cowan and Bessie Oliver.  The same place appears to be Bessie Oliver's usual place of residence, but it is even more difficult to work out in that column!  I have attached a little more of the image here.  She is the daughter of Angus Barton Oliver and Jessie Murray.  Interestingly, the marriage was registered in Kirkton, despite the fact that it is stated to have taken place in Cavers.

Cheers,
Clare

From her place of residence the second and third letters look like "o" and "d".
This would make the place Wodlands !!!
