cronin family
« on: Sunday 28 May 06 22:25 BST (UK) »
can any one help me find information on this family, as i cannot find them on the census, yet based on a marriage and birth certificate they are living in newcastle upon tyne

marriage cert:1896
peter cronin aged 23 (driver in royal artillery) father patrick
living at the barracks, newcastle. father a labourer
mary ann marshall 20 father robert marshall (engine driver)
i have found his wife, before she was married

then in 1905 his son michael cronin was born in newcastle
yet i cannot find them any were in newcastle 1901 census
peter cronin would have been born c1873 yet he is not recorded in england, i am assuming he may have been irish
so that is the reason why he is not recorded. his son michael was married in 1937 in newcastle, so everything
suggests they were living in newcastle from 1896

can any one help
kindest regards
michael

Your issue is that Peter was in the army and in 1901 there was a war on. The Boer War 1899-1902. Many soldiers (and men in general since they volunteered) were serving abroad in South Africa at the time of the census. Some army wives accompanied their husbands.

Peter's Royal Artillery army papers will be at The National Archives so if you ever get the chance to visit TNA you will be able to track his whereabouts through his army records.

Also, there's a Peter Cronin b1878 in Newcastle Staffordshire in 1901.
Probably not the correct one, but it highlights the problem of making assumptions.

The marriage certificate specifies Newcastle upon Tyne as opposed to Staffordshire Newcastle under Lyme (Newcastle L with a more southerly volume 6b reference)

Marriages Jun 1896
CRONIN  Peter    Newcastle T.  10b 232

I don't think anyone at this point knows where Peter was born, but as there is nothing on him in earlier censuses, Ireland must be a strong candidate. Peter Cronin born Newcastle upon Lyme tracks back on the 1881 census to parents John and Mary. John was an iron forgeman. There are very few Peter Cronins on the 1891 and 1881 censuses I checked them against potential fathers and found none of them had a father called Patrick.

You are perfectly correct assumptions and presumptions are the twin 'evils' of family history research.

Message for Walkerlad

I spent absolutely ages and ages looking for my relatives in 1901 (and other census).  I was successful however when I when to the advanced search page on Ancestry.co.uk site.

By putting just the person's first name - which in the 1901 was Peter and his father's first name and his mother's first name I found the Elliotts transcribed as Ellrott! Never would have even considered looking for Ellrott - when I looked at the image I realized that the dot over the 'i' was so faint the transcriber read it as Ellrott!  This may be an option you can try.

Was also very successful using this strategy for the surname Straughan in earlier censuses - hope this will help.

Hi

Just a few words about the surname Cronin.
It's an old Irish Catholic surname, most common around Cork/ Kerry.

My boss is a Sunderland born Cronin and I've tried looking into his Cronin ancestry for him in the past. Not an easy task!
