What does this mean on census returns
« on: Friday 02 June 06 22:37 BST (UK) »
Can anyone explain what FWK or FNK (cannot tell!) means on census returns.  I have it on all returns on one line, not only for them but for most of the households around them.  Any ideas?

Many thanks to both of you.  It did seem odd that everyone in the household other than very young children had the same initials.  However one progressed at the age of 71 to become a rat killer!!!

Hi Folks,

On the same subject of initials especially, on the 1841 census, what does MS or FS mean under the occupation column? I seem to have them dotted all over the place on both my tree and my husbands! It seems to apply to both sexes and all ages!

Fingers crossed someone can enlighten me - I feel as though I am the only idiot who does not know!

Thank you, it is so easy when you know!

The only thing is I am not sure if that would also apply to some of the children, perhaps the person doing the 'form filling in' got carried away!

Thanks again,
Patsy

It certainly could apply to children - at least over about the age of 10. Children got to be servants early in those days. My great grandmother "went into service" at the age of 12.

Cheers

Dear Veron,

Thanks for your reply. Yes I agree with you children did start work early, I have even noticed a coalminer aged 12!

I myself started working professionally in the theatre aged 12, (1960) but that was pure joy even if it was hard work doing 13 performances per week, and I would not have had it any other way. My pay by the way was 5/- (25p) per week. It did not even cover the cost of the bus fare to Sunderland from South Shields for the week, but I did it because I loved it. Not quite like all the child MS & FS on the 1841 census I am sure.

Thanks again for your interest.
Best Wishes,
Patsy
