Can someone please tell me how to flatten an image.
Not sure where to look in adobe. I think it is part of a layer
but where?
Thanks

Go to the arrow at the top of your layers dialogue box and from the dropdown box select flatten image.

You also wanted to know how to invert the selection.

Den,
I know now how to flatten and invert, but my question is this.
After I select the subjects
After I invert the selection
use brightness and contrast
check again for dust and scratches
flatten

Will my image that is inverted go back to normal before I save?

Okay Joy,
By inverting your selection, any adjustments will now have been made on the part that wasn't originally selected (on the pic you are talking about, this will be the bacground). Any such changes will remain after the image has been flattened.
Another little tip if you want totry something and then reverse it is to press ctrl+Z, that will take you back one step. But even better is to press ctrl+alt andkeep them held down and then you can reverse as many steps as you like by continually pressing Z
