Photo dating opinions
« on: Sunday 04 June 06 23:07 BST (UK) »
Hello

Without me biasing anyone by giving clues would anyone hazard a guess at the date of this photo.  I thought I knew who this was but information that has just come to light is causing a rethink.  I think this is quite tough as there is little to go on as far as costume ... anyway any ideas most welcome.

Cheers

Looks like late 1880s/early 1890s to me.

I'll go with mid-late 1880s based on what she's wearing...when did you think it was from, Biker?

I can't find anything about the photographer online....is there anything on the back of the card?  From the front, it looks like the kind of card that was plain on the back, and dates between mid-1880s and late 1890s.

Thanks you two, I think that my guess was around the same time - does pose a bit of a conundrum though.  Need to do a bit more research on this one.

Nothing on the back of the card.  I too found nothing on this photographer.  I thought there might be a clue in the SE postal district but I see that such designations were started 1857 and it wasn't until WW1 that the SE10 stuff started so a big window of opportunity!

I don't have the original of this one and don't think anything more that I have is  on it.  Think there is a girls ribbon in the photo too so was probably a family shot and then separated.

I'll check on historical directories for this but doubt it will shed any light ...

Thanks again.

Ouch!  Lights went out for a while  ;)

Now this is interesting ... a short history of 27 Trafalgar Road Greenwich (noted from photograph)

1891 census Mr Greenstreet Toymaker and family
1901 census Mr Hazard and family Photographer
1904 Trade Directory John E Hazard Photographer
1908 Trade Directory Samuel Sharp Photographer
1914 + 1916 + 1918 Trade Directories Frederick Sharp Photographer

Erm, what do you think now?

Also wondering how old this lady is?

Mysteriously ...
Biker  :)

Yes - what happened. I thought you'd all turned into pumpkins ;)

I'd check on Mr Greenstreet's death around that time.

Think the woman could be early - mid thirties, could be even late twenties  :-\

Que?  Not sure why you asked but he appears to have died in 1904 in Camberwell.  Or am I too tired to realise the subtlety of your interrogation?  ;)

Well, If he was there in 1891 and not in 1901, he might have died. I was just trying to find a date that the illustrious photographer moved in. As you were being cagey about his first names, I wasn't going to look him up myself :o
Obviously, Mr Hazard took over beween Mar/Apr 1891 and Mar/Apr 1901 (I have all the census dates but I'm too tired to look for them)

Haven't you got access to land registry records - leases and stuff, adverts in the Greenwich newspapers in the 1890s etc...........................

Go on Biker, you can do it ;)

Don't discount the possibility that this may be a reprint of an earlier photograph...the fact that it's obviously a portion of a larger photo might suggest this.  It would also explain why she's wearing the clothes of the 1880s in what seems to be a 1900s photo.
