Hoare/Tickner/Robinson/Simpson
« on: Tuesday 06 June 06 15:04 BST (UK) »
Hi folks
I'm in a quandary with this lot! They all married what we think were sisters.
Georgina married Reg Hoare - they had a son John who died trying to row the "Puffin across the Atlantic in 1966
Evelyn married Albert Tickner had Dorothy and Roy
Peggy (margaret) married Wm Robinson had Norman
Keziah married Ernest Simpson had Arthur and Joyce
The best I've got on dates is this:
Ernest simpson died aroung 1975-80, probably in Leicester aged over 90 yrs.
The surname of the ladies MIGHT be Flower/s or Blower/s but I don't have a certain lead on any of them.
They were the first family of my great grandmother and my dad (born 1921) knew some of them as uncles/aunts or cousins.
Any body with any connections with any of these who be a tremendous help. Once we get some dates and a proper surname we're on a winner - I hope!
Thanks
revmother

Hello, revmother,

The first thought that came to mind was you did have some info that could give you a lead, altho it would mean a bit of a search.   Here goes.

John Hoare died in 1966 in what must have been well publized circumstances, there would have been an investigation, PM & inquest, try newspapers.

Have you tried to find any details ?  How old was he when he died, this would give you a possible birth date.   Find the registration for the birth, obtain the cert & this will give you his mother's maiden  name.  Hopefully take it from there, Georgina ..?.. & Reg Hoare's marriage, an approx birth date for Georgina from that cert, then try to find any birth registrations for the ?sisters.  heigh presto !! with a huge amount of work & luck you will have your family.

I can hear you saying 'oh, yes, was that a pig that just flew past the window',  do not dispair, I have known worse scenarios & some info has come to light that can help.

Good luck

Meliora

RIP 1927-2018

For what it's worth, a Times article about the Puffin crossing (25 July 1966)  referred to John Hoare as being the son of Mr and Mrs J.R. Hoare of Leicester.  In this and other articles about the journey he is always referred to as "of Leicester" and his age is variously given as 28 and 29.  The location of the upturned boat was reported from Nova Scotia on  17 October 1966.

I can't find a suitable birth of a John Hoare in 1936-38.  Perhaps it might be worth contacting the Leicester Mercury or other local papers; there might well have been a memorial service for John after the boat was found - and newspapers often list those attending, which are likely to include immediate and extended family.

The British Library at Colindale carries the Leicester Mercury 1919 to date.
