Hi all,

Here is another photo I took at Black Notley Hospital in 1958/59. Patients and a staff member outside Denton Ward. I have more photos to post so watch this space!

Here are another couple of BN photos. I try to pick the group photos as someone may recognise one of the characters. Not sure when the Christmas photo was but is either 1955 or 56. The other group shows the typical arrangement for "plenty of fresh air". My mother is sitting on the grass next to the nurse. My dad always said that whilst the patients were used to the cold he used to freeze when visiting. Just for him to visit was a days trek on a coach from London to the hospital. The A12 then used to meander through what are now villages. I see the photo of Dr Pollack from Frances. He look very much like the photo I have marked as Dr Paluk.

Hopefully I've attached an aerial view of BN Hospital from the 1980's

I  have been undecided as to post this or not...but here goes!
This was written by patients before I was admitted who I did not know. It was just handed down to new girls after they had arrived and settled in. Except for the mention of a corpse which I never did see, I found it accurate to life in Black Notley..... Tongue in cheek.

 The Patients Dilemma

Our life in Black Notley is tiresome and dull
We never go nowhere
Except up the pole
It starts in the morning
and ends in the night
There is  not one thing happens to make our lives bright
We sit here and worry
We cry and we fret
Its all pills and bed pans
And take what you get
The walls in the San
Are a horrible disgrace
Of good looking darlings
There just isn't a trace
You just can't do nothing
It isn't a joke
Talk about fed up
You cannot even smoke
You look out the doors
And see nothing but trees
We have such thin blankets
We near enough freeze
We look out the windows
Talk till we are hoarse
When along comes a trolley
On it a corpse
If its is not P.A.S.
It is Inah or Strep
Talk about patience
We do not have any left
It's needles and refills
Digs till we are sore
If you dare grumble
They give you some more
To laugh is a crime
To cry is a sin
The only fun we get
Is when new girls come in
It's Gastric Lavages
Cultures each week
The walls need repainting
The lavatories reek
The food always cold
The meals are a mess
Whenever we eat them
We will leave you to guess
It's Phrenics and A.P.s.
And P.P.s. galore
We would like to go to Switzerland
We can't because we are poor
But when all is said and done
Although it sounds odd
We all love Doctor Cohen
Our little tin God
Marguine is a darling
The nurses are swell
Sister works daily to get us all well
Despite all our grumbles
Troubles and woes
We all help each other
And just have a go
So it is press on regardless
Find life not bad
Just laugh it off
When life gets too sad
It is not a bit easy
In fact it is tough
To hide all our feelings
When the going gets rough
So for once in my life
I am going to be nice
And give all people
Some friendly advice
If you want to be happy
Just take it from me
Look after your lungs
Do not get TB
