photo in a newspaper

My 3x Gt Grandfather's photo appeared in the Consett Guardian on 30th May 1913.
The Consett Guardian ceased publication in 1986.  Does anyone know if there is any way of getting hold of the original photo after all this time?

Thanks for replying.

Do you think they will have the original photo?  I already have the article and photo as printed but the reproduced photo is poor and I was hoping to somehow get hold of the original.

I know that newspapers keep archives of originals but this particular newspaper closed down so I have no idea where to look.

I'll send them an enquiry anyway.

The only thing I can think of is to contact the Newspaper that covers Consett now.

That's the Consett and Stanley Advertiser and a link leads to The Northern Echo.

If they don't know what happened to the photos from the Guardian maybe they would be prepared to print a short article asking their readers if they know.

Or try the local library-I tried the British library in London last year and even though I gave them the week the article appeared.. no joy but friend went to Blyth Library and half an hour later, hey presto, said photo and article about my great granddad on his 90th Birthday!

I think the library will probably only have the copy of the article and photo, rather than the original photo.  Having said that though I may be able to get a better copy than the one I've already got, so I may give it a shot.

Helen, I contacted the local paper that now covers the area but they didn't seem to know what happened to the Consett Guardian's Archive.

Can't have everything!

Try Beamish Museum.  Their photo collection includes a lot of original newspaper photographs and the ones you can buy are a lot better resolution than the ones you can see on screen.  They also have a lot more than are actually on the website.  It's just the other side of Stanley from Consett so it's not too far to travel but it would be worth a phone call first

Susan if you look on Ancestry "Pictures" on left hand menu and type in the surname and location you just may find one in someone's tree...a long shot I know but worth a try.
