"coal merchant's bag cassier"
« on: Wednesday 14 June 06 23:31 BST (UK) »
On one of my birth certificates for an ancestor, I have found an occupation in 1913 that reads something similar to:

"coal merchant's bag cassier"

Is this actually correct? If so, what was the role of this person?

How clear is the writing?  Could cassier be carrier?

Yes, it could well be. So he would have been a bagboy for a coal merchant?

I've tried to find this occupation on various sites but no luck. Perhaps you could put that part of the certificate on a posting so we could all have a go!

Got to turn in now; early start tomorrow.

My Dad was a Coal Merchant in Birmingham. The chaps that delivered the coal, delivered it in 1cwt bags......some they carried on their back up 2 flights of stairs....Oh the stories I have heard of coal being delivered to the bathtub....the back bedroom....all over the place!

I would bet money that it's bag carrier.

So in essence, a coal merchant was somebody who sold coal and the bag carrier was the delivery man so to speak?
