Many thanks to everyone for their help here - thanks muchly to Valda - I'm especially interested in that first listing, as my John's father was Joseph, born circa 1820!

Piece of (hopefully) great and intriguing news is that I wrote an email to my Nan about this possibility, and she's come back telling me that my Grandad was often known as Malcolm HORRAD when they were in school - that gives me some faith in this tangent at least!
