PEKIN/HIGGINS -Summerhill
« on: Thursday 22 June 06 23:04 BST (UK) »
Spelling may be different but I am looking for the name PEKIN in and around Summerhill in Co Meath.  James Pekin married a Margaret Higgins and they are my GGG Grandparents.
I have a list of all their children and can trace Margaret's Higgins family back a fair way too.  It's the PEKIN side which intrigues me the most as I can only find tiny traces of it and none which link.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Further down the line,  this couple had a daughter also called Margaret.  She married someone named Keegan who later died.  She re-married a Robert Banham who I believe was serving with English troops in the area and whom she may or may not have nursed as he was injured and became a Chelsea Pensioner.  I can't trace their marriage in England so believe it must have been between 1841 and 1853 in Ireland and probably Meath.
Thank you.

I have been researching the Malone Family in the Summerhill parish records and an Edward Malone married Elizabeth Pekin on 28-9-1856 they had a daughter Mary baptised 23-8-1857.There could possibly be more Pekins in the records.I found the info in the FHL film 926184.I hope this helps.Regards Peter

Better late than never Peter :-\

Many thanks for the information.  I believe Elizabeth may have been my Margarets sister.  They were a family of five siblings.  Their father was James Pekin and mother was Margaret Higgins.

Best Wishes

Hi

I am relatd to PEKIN's from Summerhill Co Meath...a Patrick PEKIN and Jane (nee McCardle)  immigrated to Australia in middle of 1850's along with a Thomas PEKIN and his sister Anne PEKIN...wondering if they had any siblings left behind in Ireland...does anyone have any info on PEKIN's who may have stayed...
Cheers Adnelg15

There are just 11 people with the surname Pekin listed on the 1911 Irish census - all bar one born in Co. Meath...  might be worth following up to see if they are connected to your Pekins.

   Pekin - 1911

There could be a few others recorded with a variation in spelling..

A number of records for the surname appear in Civil records, e.g. extracted births - including some which mention Summerhill : Pekin surname births

see : Introduction to Irish Records

Many thanks for the input Shane.  My Pekin relative Margaret was born circa 1816 to James Pekin and Margaret Higgins in Summerhill, Meath.
The record you lead me to only began with a James Pekin and Mary Flanagan of Summerhill in 1868 but,  he could well be my Margarets great great nephew. Only time and a little more delving will tell.
Thank you for bringing me back to my Pekin research.  I haven't worked on it in a good while.

I found a Richard Preen (PEKIN) married Agnus BURKE in Summerhill on 27 April 1834. He was previously married to Betty Hyland. Patrick from first marriage and Thomas PEKIN and some other siblings went to Australia in 1858 aboard "Arabian". I am searching for the BURKE side of the family now.
