Milnthorpe Births Wilkes children

I found a christening record on IGI for Alice, Mary Jane and Ann Wilkes 24 Feb 1856, Father Thomas Wilkes & mother Mary. In the 51 census Mary is listed as a widow and I found a death record for Thomas in 1848. Does anyone out there have access to the original records? Maybe they could explain this for me?

The 1851 census entry for Mary shows these 3  children in the household b 1846/47/49  It looks as though she just decided to have them christened en bloc in 1856.  She is on the 1861 under Wilks so no re-marriage involved
