Looking for Mary Ellen Munnerley
« on: Monday 03 July 06 06:58 BST (UK) »
My ggreatgrandmother Alice Munnerley was born in 1888 in the Liverpool area.I have found a christening record on Family Search which lists her parents as George and Mary Ellen Munnerley[nee Cross]In the 1901 census there is an Alice Munnerley listed as an 'adopted child'.
I am trying to find her parents but to no avail, maybe they emigrated,it is possible that George died as there is a death of George Munnerley in the same area in 1894 and Mary Ellen remarried.

If the above is him, then the death for George age 35 in 1894 defo seems a match.

This would be him in 1871:
RG10/3850 145 38
Knotty Ash West Derby
Knotty Ash Lane - Prescott Road

Samuel Munnerley, head, 45, Shoemaker, b. West Derby
Jane, wife, 35, b. Liverpool
George, son, 12, scholar, b. West Derby
Thomas, son, 10, scholar, b. do.
Emma, dau, 8, scholar, b. do.
Robert, son, 4, b. do.
Samuel, son, 2, b. do.

and 1881:

Can't see Mary Ellen remarrying or her death.
Have tried to trace the children found in 1891. Can't see little Jane.
The others are:
Frederick - married by 1901
George - living with sister Lily Ann and her husband Cuthbert Lambert

Looks like George's mother Jane might have been a Cross too (or simple coincidence)
Lancashire BMD has:
Marriage 1857 Samuel Munnerley - Jane Cross
Edge Hill St Mary

George and Mary E married at Liverpool, Our Lady & St. Nicholas & St. Anne according to the same site.

I can't identify Mary E in 1881  :-\
I see Lilly A Cross is visiting at West Derby ... not much help.

George's father Samuel can be found in 1851 as follows:
HO107/2192 803 58
West Derby
Prescot Road

Matthew Munnerley, head, 36 (or 56?), Cordwainer, b. Cheshire Bebbington
Ann, wife, 47, b. Lancs Walton
John, son, widower, 30, Gardiner, b. Lancs Woolton?
William, son, unm, 27, Cordwainer, b. Westderby
Samuel, son, unm, 25, Cordwainer, b. do.
George, son, unm, 22, Painter?, b. do.
Jane, dau, unm, 20, Dress maker, b. do.
Mary, dau, unm, 12, scholar, b. do.
Thomas, son, 6, scholar, b. do.
Agnes, granddau, 3, b. ??

Yes, thank you so much.
I had thought that Alice was an only child but that obviously wasn't the case.Maybe when George died the children were too much for their mother to care for.Alice was registered on the census as an adopted child but she was also listed as having the occupation of errand girl.Ifound that Jane died in infancy and might have had a twin that died soon after birth.
I can't find Lilly Ann's birth registered anywhere but this maybe because she was born before the marriage and might not have been a Munnerley.
