Hi Whisky

KKD is the Chapman code for Kirkcudbrightshire.

I think that you are now geting far enough back to use the IGI. The LDS claim to have transcribed all of the Scottish Old Parish Records, so they should be available as film from your nearest FH Centre. Some, but not all, are also online.

Hi Gadget,
thanks, I will do as you suggest, there is a local Mormon church here, so I can order the films locally, but will also try their website.

”All the Hammond men were miners, my father-in-law hated that life, so emigrated to Australia, son of William and Sarah Jane, nee Shields.    Eternally grateful to you, kind regards. Whisky”

I was interested in this because I have a minor connection to the Hammond family through Anne Park Morrison Irvine (below) so I include here some details about one of William’s sons, Andrew, and his family.

Anne Park Morrison Irvine was born on 13th July 1900 at Kirkconnel Village, Dumfries (1900: 834 Kirkconnel 28).  She was 8 months old in the 1901 census but I have so far been unable to find the family in the 1911 census.

In 1917 she was 17 years old and living at 29, Nithside Terrace Kirkconnel when she married Andrew Hammond there under the forms of the United Free church (1917: 834 Kirkconnel 17).  Andrew was a 20-year-old coal miner of 4, Helm Road, a son of coal miner William Hammond and Sarah Jane Shields.  The witnesses were Joseph Hammond and Isobel Nickerton.

So far I have seen 6 children to Andrew and Annie
William Hammond was born on 22nd November 1918 at 83, Main Street, Kirkconnel (1918: 834 Kirkconnel 8).

Andrew Shields Hammond was born on 22nd October 1919 at 107, Kingsway, Kirkconnel (1919: 834 Kirkconnel 79).

John Dunsmire Hammond was born on 10th September 1921 at 49, Kingsway, Kirkconnel (1921: 834 Kirkconnel 82).

David Wilson Grierson Hammond was born on 28th February 1924 at 49, Kingsway, Kirkconnel (1924: 834 Kirkconnel 25).

Thomas Welsh Hammond was born on 22nd October 1927 at 49, Kingsway, Kirkconnel (1927: 834 Kirkconnel 110).

Stanley Moffat Hammond was born on 1934 7th February at 51, Kingsway, Kirkconnel (1934: 834 Kirkconnel 14).

Andrew was living at 107, Kingsway, Kirkconnel when he notified the death of his father-in-law William Jamieson Irvine in 1918.

Annie died at 1, Polveoch Road , Kirkconnel on 7th March 1977 (1977: 834 Kirkconnel 7).  She was 76 and her death was notified by her son W Hammond of 1, Glenwhargen Avenue, Kirkconnel.

Andrew was found dead on 18th June 1978 at 1, Polveoch Road, Kirkconnel (1978: 834 Kirkconnel 22 & RCE 96/1978).  He was a widower aged 80 and a retired coal miner.  His death was notified by his son A Hammond of 16, Libry Street, Kirkconnel.
