This is an excellent website gifting free access to Cassell's Old and New Edinburgh by James Grant.

This was printed as a periodical in the 1880s and this six volume set describes its history, its people, and its places by using anecdotal historical text with endless illustrations.

Hamish Horsburgh has digitised the images for free use AND it's searchable.
