Lewis; William Henry. Studied at St Michael's Theological College, Llandaff in 1929. Deacon in 1930, Malmesbury for Llandaff; Priested in 1931, Llandaff.  Curate of St Fagan, Aberdare 1930-8. Rector of Derwen, Diocese of St Asaph from 1938.

Can you have a look for Rev V H PATRICK vicar St Matthias Birmingham and his curate C A WOOD. I need the date that these two gentlemen served at St Matthias together. They are not related to me but I have a torn cover of a church magazine with their names and the Verger's name and address it is just possible the verger is an ancestor of mine  the dates would tell me if it is worth pursuing further. My ancestor was the son of a parish clerk from Warwick and moved to Birmingham after 1871 He married aged 20 in St Matthias Dec 1879 and died in 1893 so I am hoping the clergy were in St Mathias some time 1879-1893

Hi Trees!
Our oldest Crockfords is dated 1897 and doesn't have a listing for either of those two gentlemen. I checked the Parish of St Mathias which told me that the Incumbent was called Filleul, appointed 1894 and the Curate was Clease, appointed 1892.  No names for their predecessors.

The church itself should have a list of previous vicars - if it's still active, perhaps you could write to the current vicar/parish clerk and see if they can help you further.

I have an Albert George Turner b1880 who I think was the Vicar at the wedding of his youngest sister Ruth Holland Turner (my grandmother) 6 Oct 1917. They were married in St Peter's Parkstone, Dorset.

Does he appear in any of these reference books please?

There are also the Ordination Records kept at Kew, these go back at least till the 1300's and of course are not listed under Church of England which didn't exist till old Henry's times in the 1500's.

I have some wonderful information from this source.

looking for such type of records you have to work out if they could have been any other belief.

Many welathy families were affected by this system.


There are also the recusancy Rolls which would also give clues as to the religion the family practiced.  They could be fined for not attending the C of England  or for daring to attend the Roman Catholic Church.
