Streatfield family of Sussex
« on: Thursday 28 October 04 23:45 BST (UK) »
I am trying to research my mother's maternal ancestors. Her Grandfather was Jonathan Streatfield whose wife was Alice Lindfield(mum's gran).  In the 1901 Census they were 25 and 22 yrs. old resp., living in De La War Road, East Grinstead, although he was a farmer(but I don't have the name of any farm?)
Although Jonathan himself was born in Cowden, his father Thomas was born in Hartfield, Sussex. From the 1801 Census I'm not sure whether Jonathan's father was Thomas,(then aged 57 and married to Emma ?, then aged 46), or Thomas(junior), then aged 26, b. in Withyham,Sussex and married to Mary Ann then aged 31, b. in Lingfield.
Please can anyone help me to link Jonathan with his correct parentage and, if possible, help me with info' on the parents of Thomas Streatfield(senior), presumably born about 1826, in Hartfield. I would appreciate any info' at all on my Streatfield ancestors.
With thanks,
Emmy
PS. As a direct consequence of your help relating to my Mum's Paternal ancestors, a previously unknown distant relative contacted me with further information linking her great, great, grandfather as brother to my great, great grandfather(Rann family). Many , many thanks for your help regarding the "Rann Family".

Hi emmy,

Welcome to Rootschat.  We'll do our best to help you.

I have found your Jonathan's baptism in Cowden:

16 Apr 1876, Cowden, Kent, parents Thomas and Emma Streatfield.  There are two other Streatfield baptisms in Cowden with the same parents, one of which confuses me because of the date being far too close to Jonathan's for them both to be babies.  They are:
Ada bapt 3 Nov 1872 and Annie 25 Feb 1876.

There are two other baptisms with these parents, but they are in Withyham.  Let me know if you want the details.

A Thomas Streatfield was baptised in Hartfield 18 May 1823, parents Richard and Mary Streatfield. Siblings look to be:
Richard 12 Aug 1809
Mary 7 Jul 1811
William 26 Dec 1813
Nicholas 16 Jun 1816
John 14 Feb 1819
George 13 May 1821
James 31 Jul 1825
(All these results from BVRI2 FHL Film ref 1067264 and 1067265)

Richard Streatfield married Mary Hills 14 Nov 1808 Hartfield, both of Hartfield, by banns. (Sussex Marriage Index)

Let us know if there is anything else we can help with.

Hi Emmy,
These are the male marriages pre 1824 (the estimated dob of Thomas snr) from Hartfield & E. Grinstead.
Can't help with later dates as the index only goes up to 1840.

Hi Little Nell and Jane,
Very many thanks for your info'. I shall follow your advise to try to find out more  about  the family.
Little Nell; Please could you give me the details of the other two children who were born in Withyham to Thomas and Emma.
Also, do you think it is possible that Annie and Jonathan were twin's as there are twins in the present day family. Would there be any way of finding out if Annie might have been Christened earlier than Jonathan for health reasons.

Hi emmy,

The other two baptisms with parents Thomas and Emma, but in Withyham are:

Mary 17 Jul 1859
William 7 Apr 1867

(from BVRI2, FHL No 1067363)

This is the 1881 census entry:
Little Mousers Farm,Edenbridge, Kent,
FHL Film 1341217     RG11/0911/50  p11

Thomas STREATFIELD M 57 M   b Hartfield, Sussex
Head    Occ:   Farmer Of 60 Acres Himself & 3 Sons
Emma STREATFIELD M 46 F   b Cowden, Kent,
Wife    Occ:   Farmers Wife
Thomas (Jnr) STREATFIELD M 26 M   b Withyham, Sussex
Son    Occ:   Farmers Son
Mary Ann STREATFIELD M 31 F   b Lingfield, Surrey,
D In Law    Occ:   Farmers Son Wife
George STREATFIELD    16 M   b Withyham, Sussex
Son    Occ:   Farmers Son Son
William STREATFIELD   b 14 M   b Withyham, Sussex,
Son
Ada STREATFIELD    8 F   b Cowden, Kent,
Daur    Occ:   Scholar
Jonathan STREATFIELD   5 M   b Cowden, Kent
Son

Hope that helps things along a bit.

I can't think why twins would be baptised separately - the only sure way of answering this question is finding both birth certificates or looking in the parish registers for further clues.
Nell

PS Just checked FreeBMD and both Anne (annie) and Jonathan have the same GRO ref for their birth certificates: Sevenoaks 2a 600 Mar 1876.  Curiouser and curiouser.

Hi Emmy
Hope this may help:
GRO death ref:
Anne Streatfield  0  Sevenoaks 2a 368 - Mar Qtr 1876.

Hi there Emmy

Glad to see that both Nell and Jane are helping with your research, as well as L of course.

Just looked on the 1851 census for Hartfield and Withyham - but although there are some 13 streatfield listed, they consist mostly of 2 families only:-
John Streatfield aged 32, farmer and his wife Susanna aged 33 plus children
and
William Streatfield aged 37, Ag Lab and Jane aged 37 plus children

There is also a Streatfield servant - aged 12

Address of John is Blackham, Hartfield and William is Little Laywoods, Hartfield

Dont know whether the above will be of help to you

Hello Emmy,

Some more info for you on Jonathan and his family.

To add to Chris's, I have found Richard, age 67, Ag Lab/Pauper and his wife Mary (63), both born Hartfield, therefore presumably Jonathan' grandparents, in the 1851 census for East Grinstead. They are at No.1 Windmill Field, which as far as I can make out is the windmill between East Grinstead and Ashurst Wood at the top of Cuttens Hill. Nicholas (age 34) is also in East Grinstead, an Ag Lab at Dunnings with his wife and 3 children.

In 1891 Jonathan (15) is at Edenbridge High St with his sister Mary who is married to Edward Cheal. Thomas (67), plus Emma and 3 children are farming Worsted Farm, again between Ashurst Wood and East Grinstead.

Do you have any post 1901 info for Jonathan? I was sorting out some old notes today and may have come across him.

Hope that's helped you along the way a bit,

Hi Forester

Hey, welcome to rootschat and especially the Sussex Boards - and thanks for that imput, well done on locating them in East Grinstead

Looking in my copy of the 1851 for East Grinstead, I also notice that we have a Nicholas aged 34 listed together with his wife Harriott aged 27 both from Hartfield together with 3 children

I notice from the list below that that information seems to match up with one of Richard & Marys children provided in an earlier message, and a sibling of Thomas.

A Thomas Streatfield was baptised in Hartfield 18 May 1823, parents Richard and Mary Streatfield. Siblings look to be:
Richard 12 Aug 1809
Mary 7 Jul 1811
William 26 Dec 1813
Nicholas 16 Jun 1816
John 14 Feb 1819
George 13 May 1821
James 31 Jul 1825

If this is definitely your family, will locate them in the 1841 census for you
