Russian Immigrant working in Merchant Marines
« on: Wednesday 19 July 06 13:20 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone could please help find

Basil John Mamantow who came from Rostov in Russia and spent 8

years working in the Merchant Marines in England. He was born in

Rostov in 1886 and immigrated to England in the early 1900 before

leaving on board the ship "Dorset" for Australia in 1911.

Sorry I do not have any more information to go on.

Thanks for your help
Mariac

His name should sound in Russian as Vasiliy Ivanovitch Mamontov.
I'll try Russian forums and sources.

Cheers
Mike

Nothing special yet, but just found that in Don region (Rostov) this family name sounds  "Mamantov"

I assume you got the information on Basil Mamantow from the National Archives of Australia website?   It states his father's name to be Ivan Mamantow (obvious, I guess from his own middle name!),  but simply states his mother to be Russian, no name given.  His birth date 14.8.1886. It also refers to his marriage in South Australia  -  do you have this certificate, as it may give you a little more info.
Interesting, too, that he had a tattoo "William Mamantow", but declared this to be simply a nickname from his days in the merchant navy.

As he had no papers of any kind to show for his birth or nationality, it could be possible that William was his real name.  Worth considering, if no Vasily turns up in the Rostov records.

Thanks Diana and Groggy for info.
Is it possible to  get information from Rostov records Diana?
Where would I be able to do this?.
Yes the info I have is from the naa. The registration for the marriage states Basil John's father as John Mamantow no mother mentioned. Yes it is interesting about the William on a tattoo.

Groggy you mention RootsChat index. Sorry but where would I be likely to find the merchant marines. Probably a stupid question but I dont know the answer.  ???
Thanks again
Regards
