Boorman's
« on: Tuesday 25 July 06 11:52 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I've just got a birth cert through for Mary Ann Webb, daughter of Parowmas Webb and Mary Ann Luck. He place of birth (and mother's residence) is given as Boorman's, Hadlow, Kent.

Does anyone know what this refers to? I've tried google with no luck :(

Thanks in advance

Hi Caz

What was the year and day/month etc. ???

I know they were travellers (seen your other posts ;)) so guess perhaps they were there for Hop-picking or something (depending upon the time of year) - perhaps BOORMANs was the farm or such like.  The date might help us to place it.

Well there's been a bit of a development on the front. The Luck family weren't travellers, they appear to have been settled in Hadlow for at least two or three generations. It appears from census returns etc that Paramus and Mary were settled in Hadlow for some time, about 15-20 years or so. They're definitely there in 1859 and 1861 and now we're looking at September 1874 for the year of Mary's birth.

Ok, there appears to be/have been a farm and oast houses named "Boormans"

http://www.clayroof.co.uk/news/wnew_pr_imagedisplay.cfm?ImageID=18

There was certainly a BOORMANS farm in Hadlow 1905/1908 http://www.kentarchaeology.org.uk/Research/Libr/KPN/A/02/02H.htm

I have also found mention of Boormans Farm Cottages, Court Lane, Hadlow (2002 planning application)

September ............... definitely hop-picking time :-\

Thanks very much :)

It's good to have an idea of where/what it is! I assumed that they stayed there for a bit but they could have been hop-picking. I know that Mary and her partner Herbert used to go down to Kent during hop-picking season.

Well, I'm chipping away at the mystery :)

Hi Caz

I've looked a bit further (now I'm back from the supermarket ::)) and if you search the following map site http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ with co-ordinate 564773,149504 you will see Boorman's Farm (to the east of Hadlow village centre) - I would guess that is it :)

You say that the LUCKs were a settled family in Hadlow - a possible/likely scenario then is that the WEBBs went hop-picking in Hadlow (families often went to the same place for decades/generations) and tookup with a local girl ???  Perhaps Mary often went "home" to have her children even or, as you say, they may have used Hadlow as their base :-\

The parish registers might turn up some interesting entries - they often do.  I haven't actually searched the parish registers of Hadlow but I have seen a similar pattern in other parish registers ie. families fruit picking in Crockenhill, Kent every July where the name of the farm is often given as the abode.

There was a tragedy in 1853 when hop-pickers employed by a local farmer from Hadlow died in an accident at Hartlake - you might find the following interesting (the 1853 Hartlake link) http://www.bbc.co.uk/kent/romany_roots/

Best wishes
