French Army Service help please
« on: Friday 28 July 06 10:07 BST (UK) »
Hi

Hope this is the right place to put this request.

I am looking for information on how to obtain my great grandfathers French Army service record, it seems that he served 1892/3.

I found the following information on his aliens registration form in Jersey Channel Island dated 1921 as follows

Name= Jean Marie Gouyette
Born= 30 March 1872 Alencon L' Orne France
Profession= Agricultural Labourer
Arrived in Uk (Jersey)= 1881
Last address in France= Ploeuc, Cot Du Nord
Goverment Service= French Army Class 1892
Passport and other papers= Military Livret Class 1892, issued at St Brieuc 1st Nov 1893

Any help or advice will be gratefully recieved.

Thankyou

Sal

The military archives are at Vincennes.

http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/FRENCH-MILITARY/2006-05/1146515235 - this post seems to suggest that you need to know his regiment to find the records (similar to the UK system, then!).

The other possiblity would be that there might be more records for him in the departmental archives of either Orne or Côtes-du-Nord, but departmental archives generally won't do research by post either.

Hi Jorose

Thankyou for replying to my message.

I am hoping to go to Cotes du Nord next year to visit the archives, my Rebindaine family came from there, i will add him to my list to see if i can find anything there.

Thanks once again

Sal
