William Mathias
« on: Sunday 30 July 06 12:21 BST (UK) »
Is there anyone out there who is descended from William Mathias, who left Reading, Berkshire for Canada in the early 1900s. His father was William Mathias from Wales and his mother Harriet Moore from Hampshire.
If there is anyone, I would love to hear from you, as I am descended from William's baby sister Jessie.

You probably would need to be more specific,  as although I only found one on the BMD...there were likely many by that name...
Do you have a middle name? date of birth? Last census you found him on?

Specify with all that you know about him and perhaps someone can  eventually find the exact location on a census ( only up to 1911, and incomplete, but you never know!) or possible offspring depending on the age?

Best of luck!  J.J.

Hi there J.J. Thanks for your interest.
The best I can do is,
William Stephen Mathias, born Basingstoke, third quarter 1889, but the family lived in Reading.
His father William Stephen Mathias came from Pembroke, his mother Harriet Charlotte Moore came from Southsea.
I think he left pretty early in the 1900s as I have a picture of him with my mother, taken only a short while before he left. Mother looks quite small and she was born in 1901.
It's a long shot, but I thought that if there is anyone out there, it would be nice at least to say, Hello.

Hi PaulaToo,

Look slike William came to Ontario - he married in 1913.

Registration #: 001616-13 (Brant Co.)
Groom: William Stephen Mathias
Age: 27
Residence: Paris, Ontario
Place of Birth: Reading, England
Marital Status: Bachelor
Occupation: Labourer
Religious Denomination: Anglican
Father: William Stephen Mathias
Mother: Harriet Moore

Bride: Lily Ada Moore
Age: 18
Residence: Paris
Place of birth: Nottinghma, England
Marital Status: Spinster
Religious Denomination: Congragationalist
Father: Edwin Moore
Mother: Hannah Rose

Witnesses: William G Baker and Ada Baker, both of Paris.

Married at Paris on Oct. 9th, 1913, by John Rushton Hayworth, Congregationalist.

William served in WW1 - you can see his attestations papers by searching for William Matthias in this database: http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/020106_e.html

He doesn't seem to be on the Cdn. Virtual War Memorial, which lists those who died in service, so it would seem that he survived the war.  You might be able to find out more about him by ordering his complete military file (instructions on the database page where you find his entry).  If you can spring for it (cost of photocopying), it usually has very interesting info, and could have info on post-war stuff, like pensions or other things that might give you clues.

Birth records of any children would not yet be available (only public up to 1908), so you will have to try other methods of finding out what happened to him after the war.  Perhaps the local library or historical society could help?  Here is the link to the Brant County GenWeb:  http://www.rootsweb.com/~onbrant/

Good luck!

A big hug and Thank You, MJP

I know what happened to the rest of the family, and had no clue about William.
Until now, when I have just started seriously looking into the family tree with the internet I though it would be impossible to find him.

I have a vague memory from the 50s of a lady who called on us, and said she was his second wife, first wife died, and that she was in England to meet his family and tell them that he had just died himself. She brought with her a picture of his son, William, who would have been the third William, son of William in that line.

This is magic news for me. Thank you again,
Paula

Glad I could help Paula!

Further searching has revealed that William and Lily had a stillborn child, John Henry Matthias, on Dec. 1, 1924.  (Died at Willett Hospital, address of parents - Paris, physician - W. J. Logie, burial - Dec 2, 1924, place of burial and undertaker not given, registration # 008184-24 Brant Co.).

Death records are available up to 1932 and I don't see a death for Lily, so it seems that she died after that.  Therefore William's second marriage, or his son's marriage, would also not be available (marriages public to 1924). So...back to the library?  I would think that looking for an obituary for him in the early 1950s would be the next logical step??

Thank you again, MJP.
John and Henry are both names in that side of the family. Well, Henry isn't, but that was one of the little secrets of the day, that we are falling about laughing over now, (when I'm not tearing my hair out trying to find who the guilty party was.)
Sad that the little boy was stillborn. I always think that must be a terrible blow.

By the way, if you would like to put a face to the name, I have just entered a photo of him with his little sister Jessie on the Our Ancestors thread on the Even Lighter Side. I've also put up a photo of his mum Harriet.
