Hudson Family - Help Please
« on: Monday 31 July 06 02:39 BST (UK) »
I am going bonkers trying to find this Hudson family, can someone please help?

Things I know from 1871 census Old Tile Sheds, Newbottle, Durham
Thomas Hudson Widower Age 40 Fire Brick Lab Born Louth, Ire
Sarah Hudson Dau Age 12 Born Consett
Henry Hudson Dau Age 9 Born Consett
Isabella Hudson Dau Age 7 Born Consett

There is also a Mary Hudson born c1866 Consett but I can't find her other than on the 1891 census when she was staying with her sister Sarah and BIL Robert Simpson in Westoe, Durham.

Sarah Hudson married Robert Simpson in Dec 1886 Sunderland, Durham (source FreeBDM)  I can't find exact birth dates for the Hudson children so cannot order birth certs to find Thomas Hudson's wife and I can't seem to find anyone on census records that seem to be the correct family.

Thanks  Susan - NZ

Hi Susan,

It took a bit of searching to find this, but I think we may have one of those mysterious name changes here. I did a search for "Sarahs" born 1859 in Conside & Knitsley ( = Consett before 1894) and found a Thomas Hatser and family in Consett in the 1861 and 1881 censuses. Per 1881, Thomas was then aged 52 , born Ireland, a widower, labourer at brick works, children as follows:

Mary Hatser 22  b. Consett
Sarah Hatser 22  b. Consett
Henry Hatser 19  b. Consett
Isabella Hatser 17  b. Consett

In 1861, Thomas Hatser aged 30, a labourer is recorded with wife Bridget (25), both from Ireland, twins Sarah and Mary aged 2, born Consett.

The ages of Sarah, Henry and Isabella tally with your Thomas Hudson's children, and here we have sister Mary as well. The "Hatser" family are not listed in the 1891 census. Could Thomas Hudson ( Or Thomas Hatser for that matter) be an alias?

Hope it's not too cold for you in NZ - can you send some rain over to UK please

Susan,

Just to follow up on my previous post re the notable similarities between the Hudson and Hatser families, I haven't been able to find any record of birth registrations for the Hatser children, nor of the death of a Bridget Hatser. However there was a Bridget Hudson whose death was registered in 1867 in Durham aged 30 ( 2Q 1867, Durham 10a 172).

Hope we are on the right track with this.

There is a birth registration for a Henry Hudson for 1862 in Durham Northern registration district that would cover Consett.    A marriage of Thomas Hudson and Bridget Kelly in Durham Northern 1858.

It does look like Thomas Hudson and Thomas Hatser are one and the same.

Interestingly, although the original image clearly shows 'Hatser',  the family have been indexed on Durham Records Online as Hutson/?Hudson.
For the record, in 1861 they were at Dickinsons Cottages, Conside, RG9/3739/Folio 76/Page 42/Schedule 174.

Thank you all so much for your help I really do appreciate it - and you have proved that genealogists are the nicest people around.

I have huffed and puffed trying to blow this rain over to you so I hope it makes it (watch out for those gusts of wind that may come with it :-).

Jennifer, I noted your interest in Reed's in Durham.  I have a James Reed born c1807 Ireland living in Durham with his family - wife Mary (b Ire), Catherine (b Ire), Rose (b Ire) and Ann (b 1845 Sth Shields) and living Academy Hill, Westoe according to the 1851 census.  Any connection?

Once again, thank you everybody for your help.

Susan -NZ - on another wet, miserable day

I don't think there is a connection - I do have an ancestor named James Reed but he was born in County Durham and his father in Newcastle on Tyne.
Your efforts with the weather worked - we had about 3 hours of glorious rain last night, our first significant fall for many weeks.
