Surnames search for the fawley area
« on: Saturday 30 October 04 19:59 BST (UK) »
Hi  :)
Can anyone give me any information for the following famlies.
Rollins,South,Wheeler,Bartlet (bartlett) Burt,Cooper,Baker, Willis.
I understand that the South family were carriers of some sort around the Fawley area.
William Henry Rollins would have been my Great Grandfather.
He married Annie South in 1890 I dont know if Annie died or they devorced but William remarried a Lillian Whitmore.
I look forward to hear from you.

I've done quite a bit of work on the Willis families of Fawley and neighbouring parishes, back to the 17th century.  Happy to try to answer any questions if KevH comes back to this thread, or if anyone else is interested.

Hi Richard, my ancestors lived in Fawley in the 1770s. Have you come across Thomas Rassell, Mary Withers or Mary Flight? Thomas was a Salt Duty Officer at Fawley who fathered these two Marys' children in 1771. I'm not aware of any Willis connection though.

I've come across Thomas and Mary RASSEL.  They lived in Ower in the 1770s, which is a small hamlet north of Calshot in Fawley parish, and where part of the WILLIS clan lived.  I have record of baptisms for four children: Mary (1776), Ann (1777), Sarah (1780) and Hannah (1781).  Probably the daughter Mary was buried 22 Jun 1777 in Beaulieu.  You say he was a salt duty officer, which means he probably came from outside the area.  I see the HGS index has a baptism for Thomas the illegitimate son of Thomas MASEL and Mary FLIGHT in 1771.  MASEL may be a misreading of RASSEL.  Thomas MASEL has another illegitimate child that year too: Betty daughter of Thomas MASEL and Molly WILTON.  Possibly WILTON is a misreading of WITHERS, as WILTON is not a local surname while WITHERS is.  I know for experience the Fawley baptism register in the 1760s and '70s is badly faded and particularly difficult to read, so misreadings of this sort is quite common in transcripts for this period.  Have you looked at the register yourself?

I have a Mary FLIGHT marrying James BANKS in 1784 in Fawley.  James is a distantly related to me.  The surname FLIGHT seem to be common in Fawley in the first half of the 18th century and then die out.  I've not looked at the family in much detail, but there are at least two Marys of a suitable age to be James's wife and/or the mother of Thomas's illegitimate child: one born 1744, the other 1750.  I have no record of either dying young.

Do you know whether Mary WITHERS was from Fawley originally?  Her marriage to Thomas was at Portsmouth in 1773.  For that matter, are you sure the woman he married is the woman he had an illegitimate daughter with two years previously?  I've come across a few WITHERS in my research, though more in Dibden or Eling than Fawley, but I can't find a Mary or Molly of a suitable age to be Thomas's wife.

Wow!  What a detailed reply, thank you for taking the time to respond so fully!

I'm descended from Thomas Flight (later Rassell) born 1771, son of Mary Flight and Thomas Rassell - I have a copy of the bastardy bond regarding a male child [obtained from Hampshire County Record Office].  There were two bastardy bonds within a month of each other, this one and another regarding Mary Withers and Thomas Rassell.  Both bonds name Thomas Rassell, salt duty officer at Fawley and also his own father (another Thomas Rassell just to add to the confusion!) who was a salt duty officer at Hayling Island, therefore I surmise Thomas from Fawley was probably under 21 and his father would have been liable to pay if his son defaulted.

Thomas from Fawley married Mary Withers 16.06.1773 and had three daughters with her that I'm aware of: Betty (Elizabeth) born before 20.02.1771 which is the date of the second bastardy bond mentioned above regarding a female child, Mary Ann b. 17.03.1776 at Fawley who later married Thomas Tulk and Harriet b.1787 (so 21 years later which seems odd) who later married Robert Bowie Nelson.  These three daughters are named in Thomas's will with Betty named as his natural daughter so therefore I surmise the female child of the 2nd bastardy bond.

I found the will of Thomas Rassell named in both bastardy bonds and here's the wording:

"after the Decease of my beloved wife Mary Rassell I give and bequeath unto my three Daughters (that is to say) I give unto my Natural Daughter Betty Rassell one third part of share of my Freehold messuage or tenement situate lying and being in Duncan Street in the Parish and County aforesaid. I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Mary Ann Tucks the Wife of Thomas Tucks [later amended to read Tulk and there was a Corn Factors partnership dissolved betweeen Rassell and Tulk in 1815 recorded in the local newspaper]  one other third part of share of my Freehold Messuage or tenement situate lying and being in Duncan Street in the Parish and County aforesaid. I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Harriet Rassell one other third part of share of my Freehold messuage or tenement situate lying and being in Duncan Street in Parish and County aforesaid and after the Decease of my wife Mary Rassell all the rest residue and remainder of my household goods and chattels of every kind and denomination and wheresoever I give unto my three daughters heretofore mentioned"

I guess that his son Thomas referred to in the first bastardy bond who was born a Flight assumed the name Rassell at some point as his father only produced female children with Mary Withers.  He gave the middle name Flight to his first three children and until some kind soul on Rootschat pointed out the bastardy bonds in Hampshire CRO I was mystified why they would have that name.

I don't think I have looked at the register you mentioned but considering I've been researching for many years and still haven't got all my notes properly in order there's a chance I may have done!

Unfortunately I don't have any information about Mary Withers as I've not researched her, being more interested in Mary Flight as she's my ancestor.

Thanks again for all your information and my apologies for the rambling nature of my reply!
Kind regards, Heather

Rassell - South Hayling/Portsea/Chelsea,  Hellyer - Totnes/Islington,  Roots - Hackney,  Edden - St Pancras
