« on: Saturday 30 October 04 22:09 BST (UK) »
Can anyone tell me how I can trace the Catholic parish records in Scotland mainly Glasgow. I was up ther last year and was told the Cathedral but did not find them very helpfull. Can someone confirm that Scotlands people site parish records does not have the Catholic ones.
Thank Helen

Hello Helen

The Scotlands people website says:
Roman Catholic registers are still held at diocesan or parish level, but copies can be found in the National Archives. See www.nas.gov.uk.

The NSA website says:
NAS also holds copies of all of the surviving Roman Catholic registers of births, marriages and deaths for the years before 1855. Both of these collections may be useful if you are unable to find a record of baptism, marriage or death for your Scottish ancestors in the Church of Scotland records in the General Register Office for Scotland. However, you should begin your research with them first.

Also:

Roman Catholic Church
The Records
It was dangerous for Catholics to keep records before 1830. As a consequence, parish records are far fuller after 1830 than before it. Most of the records held in NAS are copies of records held elsewhere, in particular by the Scottish Catholic Archives, Columba House, 16 Drummond Street, Edinburgh EH3 6PL.

I hope that helps you.

Nell

I thought that would be the case ..... although not many people know it exists.
My own experience at St Andrews was less than welcoming ....... wonder if my atheism was showing  :o

PS this is in direct contrast to the assistance and welcome I've had at a number of RC parish churches.
