Travellers and Census
« on: Thursday 03 August 06 06:17 BST (UK) »
Hi anyone who can help !
In researching my  wife's family we have discovered that her favourite grandmother was from a traveller family and we are now stuck. We have tried The galloper site but no success. The passing through site seems to have bee taken by a blogger.
We obtained a marriage cert for her wedding in 1905 aged 22 to Frederick Alfred Pell at Parish church St Pancras on 25 Sept.Grandmother's father is given as
Edward Purkis  - Traveller and her name (quite correctly )is given as Constance
Purkis. All the other family links have gone well back to the 1790's but the one dearest to my wife is a blank.
Any help or advice gratefully received!!

Hi DNA,

Welcome to RootsChat. I have moved your post over to our Travelling People Board. Quite a few of our members have travellers in their history. I am sure they will be happy to help you and offer advice. You will find Passing Through is now hosted by RootsChat. Make sure you take a look at the other links posted on this board also.

 :)Many thanks Welsh Lady
We have had such little success that we think we will send for the Birth Cert to see if the father is recorded as Edward Purkis or Perkis. We have tried Census and
found nothing.Maybe some one will notice the names on a travellers listing.
Thank you for looking.

Hi DNA,

It struck me when reading this post that if the birth reg that Welsh Lady found is for your Constance, then it is the same reg dist as when she married, they didn't travel very far ;D

Anyway I was wondering if there was an address for Constance on her marriage cert, as it would be worth checking that address on the 1901 census.  It may well be that Edward was deceased and Constance's mother had remarried.
