Hi Barbet,

Beth's information certainly looks feasible.   There is an Elizabeth Mussell, a widow, aged 62 and born Hale in the 1851 census.   It would be useful to find her in the 1841 married to George.

I am descended from the Mussell line via Grace Mussell born 1755 and daughter of George born 1718.

I was interested in your mention of James Batten.   I have found the Batten family in several parishes and wondered whether you had traced yours.   I am fairly confident that mine are from Pitton and Farley, but I remian interested in confirmed appearances in other parishes.

Regards

Colin

Eva Charlotte Shergold = Kenneth G Webb ( Kenneth was born 1870 Downton Wiltshire)

Hester Ann Shergold born 28/05/1861 Claredon Salisbury =
Harry G Webb , 09/10/1882 Fisherton Anger Salisbury( which exactly where I am email this to you)
Harry was born 1859 Downton
died Manningford Bruce Wiltshire 22/09/1909, he was a police Inspector,
Hester died at Enford Wiltshire 28/05/1861

Miriam Eliza Shergold = Lewis George Webb 10/06/1886 Alderbury Parish , Miram was a cook.

I possibly have more info at home in my other file which I will bring to work tomorrow Thursday

Three Shergold sisters marrying three Webb brothers.
I hope this might help and we can find a connection.

If you need any information Downton is about 5 miles from where I live and we arer trace our family the webb's from there so I can easily have a look at anything you need and i have a shop in the centre of Salisbury so it is very easy for me to nip to the library and check things out for you.

                                Regards

                                   Nicky

Hi Colin
So far my BATTEN connections are from Redlynch/Downton, but I am only back to late 1700's.

Hi Barbet,

When I was looking for the Batten family south of Salisbury, I found a fair number in Whiteparish.   The first baptism was about 1670 and I guess there must have been over 70 entries with similar numbers of Batten and Battin.

Best wishes

Colin

Hi Vicki,

My wife is descended from Grace Shergold, the wife of Robert Down, born Great Wishford in 1749.

I believe that her parents were John Shergold and Grace.

Any connection with your family?

Regards

David

Hi Jean,

Thanks for the information.

As far as I know, all my Down’s and Shergolds came from Great Wishford. Using the IGI and my own research from Parish Records, the lines I have are as follows:

Elias Down born 1778 to Robert Down and Grace Shergold
Robert Down born 1750 to Robert Down and Ann Robson.
Robert Down born 1726 to Elias Down and Mary Ford.
Elias Down born 1694 to Elias Down and Rebekah,
Elias Down born 1667 to Edward Down
Edward Down born 1631 to Christopher Down and Joanne Barter

Grace Shergold born 1749 to John Shergold and Grace Grave.
John Shergold born 1723 to Robert Shergold and Mary.
Robert Shergoll born 1698 to Robert Shergoll and Frances
Robert Shergold born 1673 to Robert Shergold

Does any more of this agree with your records?

David

Hi david, Yes the Down's information agrees with mine. Robert born 1726 to elias and mary   my line comes from Brother Elias born 1733 married Elizabeth Sweatman 1757 , son  Richard 1758 m Mary Miller 1788. son Richard 1790 m Celia Ward son William born 1813 m Mary Ann Blake, Daughter Sarah 1843 M John Dowdell in 1867.

Dear Vicki, I too am looking at the Shergold name but have only just begun !
I can give you the name of Jane Louisa Whale (nee Shergold) who was born 21.1.1883 in the UK and emigrated to Canada, raised her family on a farming property and died in 1964.
I also have the names of her 6 or 7 brothers and sisters who I think remained mostly in the UK. One of her sisters was my grandmother Sarah Ann Shergoldwho married Albert Rose, Brighton Sussex. It would seem that the family were mainly from the Lewisham/Bromley area of Outer London/Kent border.
Whilst I want to trace the tree, my particular interest is to trace the current relations of Whale in Canada as my father was the last to see any of them when he was posted to Ontario during the war. I know they are still there somewhere and would love to make contact with them.
I f we can strike a connection I would be more than happy to give you heaps of descendants !!
Kind Regards
