WINTER Family
« on: Sunday 13 August 06 17:42 BST (UK) »
Can any body help, I am trying to find the parents (my GG/Grand parents) of my G/Grand father Edward Winter who was born 1852/53 in Henbury Berkshire. I have Edward in the 1871 census but can't find him in the 1861 census. I think that my GG/Grand mothers first name was Hannah.

Many thanks

Baloo

Things yet to list/verify before posting a request such as this would be:

census: location, age, birthplace, companions AT EACH CENSUS until known death.
             Date/geography can and does change.

BMD records: (Birth in this case) are there entries which tally?

Background: Whereabouts _is_ Henbury?. I've lived in Berks, and I've not come across it.
You might list the surrounding towns, (from multimap/alternatives)
give the census registration district(s) (from National archives site, or deduction from 1881 index)

You cannot rely on accurate transcription, nor anyone having intimater knowledge of a county's geography.
Always try to fill in what you can when making a request.

Pauline

Hi Baloo - its daunting at first !

No worries - welcome

Its Newbury ! not Henbury - it helps to have a bit of UK Geography (even if you dont live there ....)

Have you found him in later census ?

and he is a Winter, not an 1871 mis-tran .. as seen in this Birth Index entry....

Edward squeezes onto the 1851 census by 3 weeks !

HO107/1685 Folio 583 Page 31 - Chievely

I wont transcribe it all yet, but its Richard and Fanny (Frances) again as seen in the 1861

Edward Henry Winter 3 weeks
Richard Winter 38
Fanney Winter 38
James Winter 15
Thomas Winter 13
Hannah Elizabeth Winter 12
Lucey Jane Winter 10
Richard Winter 8
John Winter 6
Harriot Winter 4
Mary Winter 2

So where was he in 1861 - simply missed off the family by the enumerator ?

Hello,
I have Winters in Chievely who are more than likely related.  The Richard in 1851 age 38  father of your Edward Henry who is also there, is possibly a nephew ( or even a son ) of my Joseph b 1786 Chieveley and Elizabeth who were also still alive in 1851. Elizabeth, however, must be a 2nd wife because she is 48 to Joseph's 65, and the eldest son living with them is age 28.  the IGI has their marriage in 1823.
I can share with you what I have and we may find the link.  In 1851 Richard's wife Fanny said she came from Kingston Bagpuize which is just up the road from Longworth.
Regards

Hello again Baloo

Oh Happy days, I have found the connection between your Winters and mine, I think.  I have just done some more exploring on the IGI and found your Richard christened 16 Oct 1814, son of Joseph and Hannah. There are other siblings.  Another look for the marriage and I come up with one on 23 JUL 1809  in  Clewer to a Hannah Major.

In the 1851 census your Richard has a cousin, Susannah Major age 39 born Woolhampton, also living with him!  Does that sound convincing enough?

I will send you a private message with my email address and perhaps you will be happy to swap information.  My link is with Joseph and his second wife, Elizabeth's son Alfred who married Emily Thorngate of my kin in 1859.

Regards
Vicwinann
