As anyone come across the STRAIN family in West Lothian?  Originally from Ireland they moved to Scotland c1860.
All information taken from my personal database compiled from original sources - Crown Copyright acknowledge as stated.

Hi wildgoose

You'd have to have more details than you've provided to find your family.  Just running a blanket search on the 1861 census for all of West Lothian on STRAIN gives zero results....but doing the same for 1871 census gives 7 results.  In order to recognize if any of these might be yours you'd need Christian names at least and preferably even more info.  The census records can be accessed through http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

1796 Spinning Wheel Premium Entitlements List for County Donegal recs. a STRAIN, Cornelius, Tully townland, entitled to a free spinning wheel(s) from the Irish Linen Board.  Number of free wheels based on acreage used for flax cultivation.  The aim being to encourage the growth of the Irish linen industry.
1834 Tithe Applotment Book, Parish Tullyaughnish, Donegal,  rec. a STRAIN, Cornelius, townland Clooneymore, liable to pay a tithe, of one tenth of annual income, for the upkeep of the Anglican Church of Ireland.
Griffith's Primary Valuation (1847-64) recs. both STRAIN & LYNAGH households in County Donegal, Ireland.
1858 Griffith's Primary Valuation recs. a Cornelius STRAIN res. in the townland of CARROWNASAUL, in the parish & barony of KILMACRENAN, Donegal.
Cornelius STRAIN leased a farm of 7 acres, 1 rood & 20 poles, from the Earl of Leitrim, at a cost of £2 5s (two pounds & five shillings) for the land and a further 5s (five shillings) for the buildings.
The next plot but one (10 acres & 15 poles) is leased by James LYNAGH at a cost of £2 5s for the land & 10s for the buildings.
The next door plot of 12 acres, 3 roods & 35 poles is leased by John & Patrick LYNAGH at a cost of £1 10s each for the land and 5s each for the buildings.
