Hewetson / Kerswell / Hyland
« on: Monday 14 August 06 19:00 BST (UK) »
Hello

I'm trying to research a RAF navigator who was killed in 1944.
ALAN JOSEPH HEWETSON        b Dec 1910    d Jul 1944
born in Gainsborough, Lincs where father was the grammar school master.

His widow Anne Kerswell married her second husband, Charles Hyland in Chapel-en-le-Frith in 1947 and I believe they lived in Buxton.

father:   James Hewetson, born in Measham, schoolmaster in Loughborough in 1901
mother: Maud Mary Hewetson (née Boness)
sister:    Winifred Maud Hewetson      b 1900
Living at 102 Park Road, Loughborough in 1901.

I would really appreciate any info and be pleased to share my research with anyone whose interested.

Thanks
          Mike

Hi Mike,

Not quite sure what info you need, However James Hewetson was born 1873 Measham
the son of Rev. John Hewetson B 1825 Hull & Ruth Barker Charlesworth B. 1831 Holmfirth,
Yorkshire who were married 9th October 1855 Elstead, Surrey.  Their other children per the 1881 Census
were Joseph Hewetson B 1860, an Undergraduate at Oxford
         Mary  B 1867
         Elizabeth B 1866
         James B 1873
Rev. John Hewetson, was the Vicar of Measham.

Re. Ruth Barker Charlesworth, this is stated on the Marriage
Ruth Barber is stated in the Census.

At the age of 18 James Hewetson, was a pupil at Repton School, Repton Derbyshire.
On the 1881 Census for Repton School there is also a William Hewetson B 1863
Measham who I assume is another son of  John & Ruth.

A google search Hewetson + Measham produces some information.
Marriages/Births for some are on the IGI

If you need further assistance or full details of Census please ask.

Hi Spendlove

Many thanks for the information which I have added to my background info on Alan Hewetson who I am principally interested in.
My research is dedicated to eight RAF airmen (one of whom is Hewetson) who are buried in a village cemetery in France. There are many in France who still honour our war dead and it is partly with them in mind that I continue to hope for more information and perhaps one day a photograph.

Thanks again

Hi rafmike

My mother in law's uncle was Alan Joseph Hewetson. We are starting to research him so if you have any additional information or photographs we would love to see them.
