Bonshawside
« on: Saturday 26 August 06 19:36 BST (UK) »
Anybody know where Bonshawside, Annan would be? I can't find anything on a map, only Bonshawside Lockerbie.

And what syllable would have the emphasis?

Best,
China

Bonshawside is a farm in Kirtlebridge which is about 5 miles from Annan and 8 from Lockerbie.  (Although it is nearer to Annan the postal address is Lockerbie) The emphasis is on the Bon part of the name with the shaw part said quite quickly.  It is located just off the Annan to Eaglesfield Road .  Hope that helps.

Thanks very much, Pam. They don't seem to be my lot but it was an interesting read anyway, particularly this line:
Cause of Death: Scroficulous abscesses in various parts of body
 :P

I did find some very nice old photos from around the Annan area...

Thanks again,

Bonshawside Farm is next to my mother's land. I don't know who is in it just now but the family I knew was called Fawcett who sold the farm several years ago. It is called Bonshawside as it was once on Bonshaw Estate which belonged to the Irvings/Irvines of Bonshaw. The estate was divided up around 1955-57 when Sir Robert Irving who once captained the Queen Mary died.

This is very interesting for me too. My grandfather was a Burnett , originally Burnet, and I've traced them back to mid 1700s. I saw Bonshawside, thinking it was a place, but wondered if in fact it was a farm since the Burnets were tenant farmers. Mary irving was married to James Masterton and their daughter Jean married the eldest Burnet I can trace back. That is my direct line. Jean's brother William married Elspeth Burnett in 1786. He was born at Bonshawside. They seem to have lived on Peatknowes Farm as did so family in the next 50 or 60 years
I was wondering if brother/sister married brother/sister. I can't get back much further though found some other inscriptions from Dornock graveyard. I wonder if my Mary Irving is related to the Bonshaw ones ?
