R.N War Grave Norway
« on: Monday 28 August 06 11:38 BST (UK) »
Hi,
On a Recent trip to Vadso Norway while i was visiting Relatives, I came across a Grave in the local Church yard
It read
Midshipman Edward J Howard
HMS Active
No Date of Death
I wonder what he was doing in Vadso so far away from Home
I have a photo of the Grave if anyone is intrested
Kind Regards
Wendy

Hi Wendy

Sounds like a RootChat challenge to me!

How old would you say the gravestone is?

Had a look at the CWGC website, but can't see a suitable burial in Norway.

On the National Archives website the following are available from the 'Registers of Seamen's Services':
Edward John Lees HOWARD dob 18 Feb 1896
Edward HOWARD dob 23 April 1886
Edward HOWARD dob 29 September 1879
Edward HOWARD dob 3 July 1879
Edward HOWARD dob 12 May 1866

HMS Active, a destroyer, appears to have had at least two incarnations, probably more.
Perhaps it saw action in Norway in WW2?

From Wikipedia:

# The eighth Active, launched in 1869, was a Volage-class iron screw corvette, sold in 1906.

# The ninth Active, launched in 1911, was the lead ship of her class of scout cruiser. She served in World War I and was scrapped in 1920.

# The tenth Active (H14), launched in 1928, was an A-class destroyer. She served in World War II, taking part in the sinking of three submarines. She was broken up in 1947.

HMS Active #9 took part in the Battle of Jutland (1916).

The Grave could Be World War2
as Norway was occupied during this time
But i would love to solve the mystery
The grave is well looked after by the locals
