Elligott (McElligott)
« on: Monday 28 August 06 17:46 BST (UK) »

Posting on the Kerry board, as I have been told that
this surname is more common in this county.

  So little info..
Mary Elligott born c.1820
     wed
James Durkan in 1846 at Ballintober,Mayo.

Moved to England between 1849/53. and had twins!

Not much, but perhaps another (Mc)Elligott researcher
may see a connection with twins.

My great-grandmother Mary Shine nee O’Connor had a sister named Johanna who was married to a James McElligott. They had 21 (!) Children, but only three become adults. My mum knew one called 'Batt' short for Bartholomew?. They lived in Bethnal Green, London. My ancestor was born November 1871, Johanna was born just a few years before. Their father was a Timothy O’Connor.
I thought that the McElligotts came from Scotland, but, I was told they came from a little village of the same name in Ireland.  Is any of the above any use to you?

Hello Tupney
Thank you for replying...to be perfectly honest..I can't say if there is any connection.
It's quite possible the Mc. was dropped from the  name..but was just plain Elligott in 1846 Mayo.
